Genital group B streptococcus carrier rate and serotype distribution in Korean pregnant women: implications for group B streptococcal disease in Korean neonates

Abstract: Increased maternal genital GBS carrier rate and difference in serotype distribution pattern of GBS may be related to the recent increase of late-onset GBS disease in Korea.

“…The ST-17 to GBS ratio was 18.72%. The prevalence rate of GBS colonization was similar to that of our neighboring countries, such as Korea (8–10%) and Hong Kong (10.4%) [14,15,16]. The genital ST-17 carrier rate in pregnant women had never been published before.…”

“…Among pregnant women, the rate of GBS carriage in the vaginal and rectal microbiota is similar in both developing and developed countries (181920), although large variations in the colonization rates are observed in different populations (21). In Korea, the reported carriage rates are 6.3%–11.5% among pregnant women (222324). However, the titers of pathogen-specific antibodies in IVIG may varying according to the plasma source, as they are influenced by the cumulative environmental exposure of the donor population.…”

“…Moreover, a conjugate vaccine incorporating the 5 GBS serotypes (Ia, Ib, II, III, and V) could prevent > 85% of GBS disease among < 3-month-old infants throughout the world (31). In Korea, the most prevalent serotypes are III, V, and Ia (in that order) (222324), and different populations exhibit varying serotype distributions (3031). Therefore, further studies are needed to consider the other serotypes (II and V) in their analyses.…”

“…Previously reported GBS positive rates among pregnant Korean women were 4.8% by enrichment culture using a cotton swab, and 6.2% by enrichment PCR using a cotton swab . Hong et al . reported GBS positive rates of 4.0% and 10% for vaginal specimens and vaginal and/or anorectal specimens, respectively.…”

“…In Korea, the genital GBS carrier rate was 2.3% in 1998, which was considerably lower than rates reported in the West . However, maternal GBS carrier rate seem to have increased recently in Korea, and relatively few studies have been performed on the topic …”
