Genipin Suppresses Subconjunctival Fibroblast Migration, Proliferation and Myofibroblast Transdifferentiation

Abstract: Purpose: Inchin-ko-to is a herbal medicine which has therapeutic effects in ameliorating liver fibrosis or cholestatic liver diseases. Its main bioactive component is genipin, which is an intestinal bacterial metabolite of this medication. Accordingly, we determined whether or not Inchin-ko-to suppresses in a wound healing model subconjunctival fibroblast (SCF) migration proliferation and myofibroblast transdifferentiation since an inhibitory effect could be of value in improving trabeculotomy outcome. Methods… Show more

“…[68] find that the hepatoprotective effect of Solanum nigrum Linn extract on CCl 4 -induced liver fibrosis is achieved through blocking oxidative stress. Xiao Chaihu Tang [76,83,85] whose active components baicalin and baicalein function as a potent fibrosis suppressant via the inhibition of the oxidative stress in hepatocyte and HSC. Handan Ganle [99] is effective in protecting against liver fibrosis by inhibiting lipid peroxidation in hepatocytes and HSC in vivo .…”

“…17 It has also been proposed in trabeculotomy to prevent fibrosis by suppressing the fibrogenic response of subconjunctival fibroblasts. 18 This study measured the biomechanical effects of genipin as a CXL agent in the porcine cornea as well its effect on corneal resistance to bacterial collagenase.…”

“…In ophthalmology, genipin has been suggested in trabeculotomy to prevent subconjunctival fibrosis by suppressing fibroblasts [28]. Its antimyofibroblast activity was also studied as a way to prevent posterior capsular opacification in cataract surgery [29].…”
