Genetics of gastric cancer

Abstract: Gastric cancer remains highly prevalent and accounts for a notable proportion of global cancer mortality. This cancer is also associated with poor survival rates. Understanding the genetic basis of gastric cancer will offer insights into its pathogenesis, help identify new biomarkers and novel treatment targets, aid prognostication and could be central to developing individualized treatment strategies in the future. An inherited component contributes to <3% of gastric cancers; the majority of genetic changes a… Show more

“…Although palliative chemotherapy and surgery are beneficial, the outcome of GC remains dismal (4)(5)(6). The high mortality of GC is explained by our poor understanding of its mechanism of progression and the lack of suitable diagnostic markers that hinder diagnosis before the disease reaches an advanced stage (7,8). GC represents a biologically and genetically heterogeneous group of tumours that are induced by multiple factors that deregulate cell signalling pathways, which leads to the acquisition of malignant phenotypes such as increased cell proliferation, inhibition of apoptosis and enhanced invasiveness (9)(10)(11).…”

“…Gastric cancer (GC) is the fifth most commonly occurring cancer and third leading cause of cancer mortality in the world (McLean and El-Omar, 2014). In Iranian population, GC is the first cause of cancer deaths in both sexes (Smith et al, 2006;Malekzadeh et al 2009).…”
