“…Nevertheless, the heritability estimate under long-day conditions was lower than previously reported heritabilities (Istock et al 1976;Palmer and Dingle 1986;Roff 1990;Bradshaw et al 1997;Miyatake and Yamagishi 1999;Wipking and Kurtz 2000;Blanckenhorn 2002;Sgro and Blows 2003). This value is substantially low, considering that heritability is further lowered in natural conditions by the enlargement of environmental variances (Roff 1997;pp.…”

“…There was also considerable variation between southern females in the propensity of their offspring to develop directly, indicating a potential for further adaptive responses, including those expected under the ongoing climate change. This study thus provides additional evidence of genetic latitudinal differences in relation to voltinism and diapause induction (Wipking & Kurtz, 2000;Denlinger, 2002;Gomi et al, 2004;Demont & Blanckenhorn, 2008) and widens the taxonomic range of species studied in this context. The latitudinal difference found in the weight of diapausing juvenile larvae is consistent with the adaptationistic expectation of countergradient variation in growth rates in high latitude populations (Ayres & Scriber, 1994;Gotthard et al, 1994;Arendt, 1997;Arnett & Gotelli, 1999).…”

“…Patterns of inheritance consistent with polygenic systems have been reported in the majority of species that have been investigated, and diapause characteristics of hybrids often are intermediate between those of the parents (Danks 1987). Single reciprocal crosses between the selected strain and a high-diapause strain in the cabbage beetle showed that the hybrids had an intermediate response, similar to many other insect species (Simis 1983; Wipking and Kurtz 2000; Tan et al 2008), indicating that diapause induction was influenced by both parents in this species. These results are in accord with those of previous studies obtained by crossing different geographic and laboratory strains with different diapause responses (Yang et al 2007; Lai et al 2008).…”
