Genetic Variability and Selection of Extra-Early Cowpea Progenies

Abstract: -The precocity of cowpea is important because it indicates the possibility of increasing and/or stabilizing production in regions with long periods of drought. The aim of this study was to evaluate genetic variability and select extra-early cowpea progenies. Fifteen F 3:6 progenies were evaluated in 2014 while sixty-two F 7 progenies were evaluated in 2015. Two commercial cultivars were used in experiments performed in the irrigated perimeter of Baixo Acaraú, in Marco, CE. The following characteristics were ev… Show more

“…This result is important since high experimental precisions make the selection process of superior individuals reliable. Barroso Neto et al (2017) reported similar values while evaluating 62 cowpea genotypes with a simple inflorescence in the municipality of Marco, in the state of Ceará, Brazil.…”

“…Moura et al (2012), also found a negative correlation between cowpea yield and the protein, zinc and iron content. According to Barroso Neto et al (2017), as it is a quantitative characteristic with polygenic inheritance, a great variation in grain yield is expected which is greatly influenced by the environment. This may have contributed to the variation in TPC, as both are correlated.…”

“…Researches have been carried out for the selection of cowpea genotypes taking advantage of the variability of landrace cultivars and using analysis of variance models for data analysis (Miqueloni et al, 2018;Gomes et al, 2020), but are scare in the semiarid region of Piauí (Rocha et al, 2008(Rocha et al, , 2011. Barroso Neto et al (2017) highlighted that, together with the variability present in landrace cultivars, the use of methods with a better genetic prediction and accuracy can contribute to increasing the efficiency and genetic gain from selection.…”

“…Restricted maximum likelihood (REML) and best linear unbiased prediction (BLUP) are considered the most efficient methods for estimating variance components and predicting genetic values, respectively (Resende, 2016). Therefore, these methods have been used by cowpea breeders to investigate the effect of the genotype by environment interaction and the adaptability and stability of genotypes (Torres Filho et al, 2017;Sousa et al, 2019;Cruz et al, 2021), as well as in intermediate selection stages (Barroso Neto et al, 2017;Oliveira et al, 2017;Aragão et al, 2022).…”
