Genetic relationship between the adult plant resistance gene Lr12 and the complementary gene Lr31 for seedling resistance to leaf rust in common wheat

Abstract: A resistant phenotype similar to that conferred in wheat by the complementary genes Lr27 + Lr31 was produced in the progeny of intercrosses of cultivars carrying Lr27 and a line possessing Lr12. This confirms that Lr12 is either completely linked with Lr31 or is the same gene. On the basis of these findings and that Lr31 is located on chromosome 4BS, it is concluded that Lr12 must also be located on 4BS. Adult‐plant genetic tests confirm that the Australian wheat cultivar Timgalen carries Lr12, and stocks with… Show more

“…Five cultivars (Sakha94, Gemmeiza9, Gemmeiza10, Sids12 and Misr2) each probably containing four genes however, Gemmeiza11 and Sids13 were the least carrier genes cultivars they probably carries just two and three genes, respectively. These results were in accordance to those previously reported [24][25][26][27][28][29][30][31].…”

“…Five Lr genes (Lr3, Lr9, Lr10, Lr26 and Lr29) each giving 33.33% frequencies within three cultivars. The method was previously reported as a quick method to serve breeding for rust resistance [11,12,[24][25][26][27][28][29][30].…”

“…Wellings (1986) crossed susceptible with resistant selections of cultivars heterogeneous for the YrA resistance, and seedling tests at both the F 2 and F 3 generations confirmed segregation for a single gene suggesting that susceptible selections carried one of the complementary genes. was previously reported, where Lr27 interacted with Lr31 to produce a unique seedling specificity (Singh and McIntosh 1984;Singh et al 1999). was previously reported, where Lr27 interacted with Lr31 to produce a unique seedling specificity (Singh and McIntosh 1984;Singh et al 1999).…”

“…Complementary genes for rust resistance have been reported on several occasions in both greenhouse and field studies. In Gatcher wheat Lr27 is ineffective on its own, but at the seedling stage, interacts with adult plant resistance gene Lr12 (same as Lr31) to provide resistance (Singh et al 1999). A common feature of both studies was that crosses of susceptible lines reconstituted the resistance specificity and segregated in expected F 2 and F 3 ratios.…”

“…Genes Lr13 (Samborski and Dyck, 1982;Kolmer, 1992;Kloppers and Pretorius, 1997) and Lr34 (German and Kolmer, 1992;Kloppers and Pretorius, 1997) in combination with each other and with a number of other genes generate stronger resistance than that conditioned by the individual genes. The Lr27 locus on 3BS is closely linked with Sr2, which was introgressed from Yaroslav Emmer (McIntosh et al, 1995), whereas Lr31 occurs on 4BS of Chinese Spring and may be identical to the APR gene Lr12 (Singh et al, 1999).
