Genetic Polymorphisms Might Predict Suicide Attempts in Mental Disorder Patients: A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis

Abstract: The aim of the present study was to analyze if the genetic polymorphisms might predict suicide attempts in mental disorder patients. The literature review and meta-analysis were conducted using the PubMed/Medline, Web of science and Scopus database using the terms: "5-HTT or SLC6A4 or 5-SERT and suicide, suicidal ideation or suicidal behavior or suicidal attempt". Thirty articles were analyzed. We found 17 articles that showed association and 13 articles that showed no association between LPR serotonin transpo… Show more

“…, or the high activity variant (de Medeiros Alves et al, 2015, (Hung et al , 2011, Shinozaki et al , 2013) that is associated with increased risk for suicidal behavior. Another recent meta-analysis has shown a significant association, between the 5-HTTLPR low activity variant and violent suicidal behavior at least in Caucasians but indicates that the high activity variant could confer risk in Asian populations (Antypa et al , 2013).…”

“…As discussed earlier, results of numerous studies are conflicting as to whether it is the low activity 5-HTTLPR variant (Caspi et al 2003;Gibb et al 2006;Roy et al 2007;Zalsman et al 2006), or the high activity variant (Hung et al 2011;de Medeiros Alves et al 2015;Shinozaki et al 2013) that is associated with increased risk for suicidal behavior. “…One strategy proposed by the National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention to predict suicide is requiring the identification of reliable biomarkers capable of identifying those at current or future risk (NAAfSPRPT ). Peripheral biomarkers for suicide have been performed, such as genetic polymorphisms of 5‐HT (de Medeiros Alves, Bezerra, de Andrade, de Melo Neto, & Nardi, ; Pandey & Dwivedi, ), NE function and its metabolite 3‐methoxy‐4‐hydroxyphenylglycol (MHPG) (Sher et al., ; Tripodianakis, Markianos, Sarantidis, & Agouridaki, ), abnormal HPA axis (Yerevanian, Feusner, Koek, & Mintz, ), and low plasma BDNF (Deveci, Aydemir, Taskin, Taneli, & Esen‐Danaci, ; Pandey et al., ).…”
