Genetic gain estimated by different selection criteria in guava progenies

Abstract: Guava plays an important role in Brazilian agribusiness.Among other goals, guava breeding programs aim to achieve more productive cultivars and improved fruit quality. Thus, the present study aimed to investigate genetic variability in full-sib progenies of Psidium guajava (guava) and estimate the genetic progress obtained from different selection criteria in order to select the most promising genotypes. This is the first work that uses these criteria of selection to guava. The experiment was conducted in rand… Show more

“…Resende (2007) states that the REML/BLUP methodology puts the potential genotypes into an order for selection, exploring all the genotype variation among and within progenies, however, considering each trait analyzed separately. This procedure has been shown to be efficient, for passion fruit (Freitas et al 2016, Santos et al 2015, guava (Paiva et al 2016), and papaya (Oliveira et al 2012, Vivas et al 2014.…”

“…In addition, the large amplitudes between the maximum and minimum variable values within each progeny may be due to the influence of biotic and abiotic factors during flowering and development, even within the intrinsic factors of the species. According to Paiva, Viana, Santos, Freitas and Amaral (2016), the amplitudes may be indicative of the high genetic variability of a species, which is an acceptable variation in progeny research.…”

“…The study was developed at the Plant Breeding Laboratory (Laboratório de Melhoramento Genético Vegetal-LMGV) at UENF. Paiva et al (2016), who selected the best genotypes in 17 full-sib families of guava using restricted maximum likelihood/ best linear unbiased prediction method (Table 1), indicated the 96 individuals genotyped in this study.…”
