Genetic evolution of influenza viruses among selected countries in Latin America, 2017–2018

Abstract: Since the 2009 influenza pandemic, Latin American (LA) countries have strengthened their influenza surveillance systems. We analyzed influenza genetic sequence data from the 2017 through 2018 Southern Hemisphere (SH) influenza season from selected LA countries, to map the availability of influenza genetic sequence data from, and to describe, the 2017 through 2018 SH influenza seasons in LA. Methods We analyzed influenza A/H1pdm09, A/H3, B/Victoria and B/Yamagata hemagglutinin sequences from clinical samples fr… Show more

“…These labs provide information about genetic evolution and patterns for Influenza A and B viruses. Data obtained from 2010–2018 have shown that vaccination plans in LAC tend to correlate with genetic findings of circulating influenza virus in the region, although the characteristics of seasonal subtype of the virus are unevenly reported across countries [ 50 , 54 , 56 ].…”

“…The year-to-year evolution of circulating influenza viruses is certainly the biggest obstacle for control, thus continuous diagnosis and sample sequencing is key to update running vaccination plans. Between 2017 and 2018, 12 NICs reported that results from samples taken in LAC matched global patterns and were fully covered by the vaccine recommended virus; even though H3 clades not associated with the vaccine recommended virus were found, studies have shown cross-reaction using trivalent vaccine viruses against this HA [ 56 ].…”

“…The use of this strategy has also been a useful tool for public health response regarding disease control. Among respiratory viruses, influenza virus is a classic example on how genetic characterization and phylogenetic analysis have been combined for influenza mitigation by providing information for vaccine compositions, molecular diagnostic protocols, antiviral development, monitoring of antiviral resistance and studies on viral lineage and molecular epidemiology [9][10][11][12][13].…”
