Genetic epidemiology, endophenotypes, and eating disorder classification

Abstract: Objective: To explore how genetic epidemiology has informed the identification of endophenotypes and how endophenotypes may inform future classification of eating disorders.Method: Literature review and synthesis. Results: Although a number of endoand subphenotypes have been suggested for eating disorders, few reach the rigorous definitions developed for candidate endophenotypes. Conclusion:Further study of endophenotypes and subphenotypes for eating disorders may assist with developing a more homogenous classi… Show more

“…On the other hand, several authors argue that there is solid empirical evidence supporting the notion that AN should be considered a distinct and separate phenotype (Birmingham, Touyz, & Harbottle, 2009;Bulik et al, 2007;Clinton, Button, Norring, & Palmer, 2004;Collier & Treasure, 2004;van Son et al, 2010). The differentiation between AN and other eating disorders is based upon recent evidence including genetics, epidemiology, response to psychotropic drugs and neuroimaging (for a review, see for example Birmingham et al, 2009.…”

“…4 Identification of candidate biological markers, which reflect endophenotypes for AN, is a starting point for the development of effective treatments. 5 For example, the well-replicated finding of a deficit in set shifting 6,7 led to the development of targeted cognitive remediation treatments. 8 Yet existing treatments have limited effectiveness for many individuals with AN.…”
