Genetic diversity of central and peripheral populations of Toona ciliata var. pubescens, an endangered tree species endemic to China

Abstract: ABSTRACT. Our objective was to examine the genetic diversity of central and peripheral populations of Toona ciliata var. pubescens, to elucidate whether the central-peripheral hypothesis applies to these populations. We analyzed 392 individuals from nine natural populations using eight pairs of polymorphic SSR primers. The results showed that the mean numbers of observed and expected alleles in peripheral populations were higher than in central populations. Common widespread and rare local (RL) alleles were ob… Show more

“…Other genetic parameter being measured was value of expected heterozygosity (He) with the value of Hewas 0.304. This He value in this study was similar to those of T. ciliata in China (He 0.305 in Liu et al (2014); He 0.378 in Li et al (2015)), T. sinensis in West Java (He 0.240) and T. sinensis in China (He 0,333 in Wang et al (2008)). …”

“…In general, RAPD can provide valuable data about genetic variations within and among populations of a species, given that data (Collignon et al 2002). This technique has been applied for detecting population genetic diversity of Toona sinensis (Wang et al 2008;Hidayat and Siregar 2011), Toona australis (Tavares et al 2012), Toona ciliata (Liu et al 2014;Li et al 2015), Melia azedarach (Yulianti 2011), Melia volkeensii (Runo et al 2004), Lathyrus sativus (Nosrati et al 2012), Gmelina arborea (Wee et al 2012), Quercus sp. (Dering and Chybicki 2012), Pinus nigra (Çengel et al 2012), and Lansium domesticum (Song 2000).…”

“…rostrata (mean H E = 0.360) was somewhat depauperate in comparison to the widespread rainforest tree, Toona ciliata var. pubescens ( H E = 0.644) [85], but was similar to that found in a tropical congener, F . picrosperma ( H E = 0.407) [34].…”

“…SSRs, and especially expressed sequence tag-SSRS (EST-SSRs), have been widely used in studies of conservation genetics of endangered species, including Annamocarya sinensis (Zhang et al, 2013), Toona ciliata (Liu et al, 2014), Aconitum austrokoreense (Yun et al, 2015), and others. Regarding P. dabeshanensis, Zhang et al (2015) developed 28 polymorphic SSR markers from the transcriptome assembly of the congeneric species P. lambertiana, whereas Xiang et al (2015) identified 19 polymorphic EST-SSRs from a cDNA library of P. dabeshanensis needles.…”
