Germplasm and breeding materials are usually characterized using morphological and agronomic descriptors, which should have a high heritability. Despite the widespread use of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) standardized descriptors, little information exists on environmental effects on descriptor values and their heritability. We have evaluated 12 tomato accessions from seven cultivar groups in three different environments (openfield conventional, open-field organic, and greenhouse) and characterized them with 36 descriptors. A wide range of variation was found for most descriptors, demonstrating their utility for describing tomato materials and their diversity and relationships. The analysis of descriptors variation reveals that while for some descriptors with a simple genetic control the accession effect accounts for 100% of the variation, for others like yield per plant only 10.83% of the variation observed is due to the accession effect. Although significant differences were found among environments for most descriptors, including a much higher yield in the open-field conventional environment than in the two others, the environmental effect was low for most traits. However, the genotype × environment effect generally had an important contribution to the structure of variation for many descriptors, and for three traits it had the highest contribution to the percentage of the sum of squares. As a result of the variation structure, the heritability values are high (>0.7) for only 10 descriptors, while for five is low (<0.3). Principal components analysis (PCA) reveals that projections in the PCA graph of a same accession grown in different environments plot together in the same area of the PCA graph. Although cultivar groups are generally clearly separated in the PCA graph, 2 accessions from the same cultivar group in some cases are intermixed. These results have important implications for detecting tomato duplicates and establishing core collections, as well as for analyzing germplasm and breeding results, when using data sets containing data of accessions grown in different environments.

The estimation of genetic diversity by qualitative, quantitative, and molecular data and their combination are important in characterizing germplasm collections for pre-breeding purposes, mainly for the identification of divergent parents. For this purpose, we assessed a population of 94 tomato subsamples from UFV Vegetable Germplasm Bank (BGH-UFV) using 10 ISSR markers and agronomic data (three qualitative and six quantitative traits). Data revealed the existence of genetic diversity in germplasm considering the three data classes. Principal coordinates analysis (PCoA) confirmed the genetic variability of the subsamples, explaining 27% of the variability in the first two PCoAs. The Bayesian based clustering analyses using the STRUTURE software verified the existence of a structured population, with three populations. The mantel test for the correlation produced by the three data classes showed highly significant correlation (r = 0.31, P<0.001) among quantitative and molecular data. The Tocher method of clustering for each dissimilarity matrices showed that the clustering patterns were dependent on the data classes. According to the results we found, it is possible to predict the best combinations of parents that can provide maximum gain in a breeding program. Besides the combine use of the quantitative, qualitative and molecular data, using multivariate and Bayesian method of clustering is an efficient method to study the genetic diversity of tomato plants in the germplasm bank.

RESUMO Divergência genética de subamostras de tomateiroPara o avanço de um programa de melhoramento genético é fundamental o conhecimento da variabilidade genética existente na espécie, o que demanda estudos de caracterização e avaliação do germoplasma disponível. Objetivou-se neste estudo a caracterização e avaliação de 101 subamostras de tomateiro do grupo Salada e duas testemunhas comerciais, uma do grupo Salada (cv. Fanny) e outra do grupo Santa Cruz (cv. Santa Clara). Foram realizados quatro experimentos no delineamento em blocos casualizados, com três repetições e cinco plantas por parcelas. Foram realizadas análises de variância conjunta e descartadas as características com interação significativa do tipo complexa entre testemunha e experimento. Posteriormente, foi realizado o diagnóstico de multicolinearidade e descartadas as Genetic divergence of tomato subsamplesUnderstanding the genetic variability of a species is crucial for the progress of a genetic breeding program and requires characterization and evaluation of germplasm. This study aimed to characterize and evaluate 101 tomato subsamples of the Salad group (fresh market) and two commercial controls, one of the Salad group (cv. Fanny) and another of the Santa Cruz group (cv. Santa Clara). Four experiments were conducted in a randomized block design with three replications and five plants per plot. The joint analysis of variance was performed and characteristics with significant complex interaction between control and experiment were excluded. Subsequently, the multicollinearity diagnostic test was carried out and characteristics that contributed to severe multicollinearity were excluded. The relative importance of each characteristics for genetic divergence was calculated by the Singh's method (Singh, 1981), and the less important ones were excluded according to Garcia (1998). Results showed large genetic divergence among the subsamples for morphological, agronomic and organoleptic characteristics, indicating potential for genetic improvement. The characteristics total soluble solids, mean number of good fruits per plant, endocarp thickness, mean mass of marketable fruit per plant, total acidity, mean number of unmarketable fruit per plant, internode diameter, internode length, main stem thickness and leaf width contributed little to the genetic divergence between the subsamples and may be excluded in future studies.
