Genetic decline and inbreeding depression in an extremely rare tree

Abstract: Abstracts Many endangered species have small population sizes, with less than 10 remaining individuals in some extreme situations. Although the consequences of a small population size have received considerable research attention, few studies have examined the fate of extremely rare plants. Ostrya rehderiana is one such species, with only 5 naturally-regenerated surviving individuals and less than 150 artificially-regenerated progeny. Using amplified fragment length polymorphisms (AFLPs), we found that there w… Show more

“…Lastly, population size is thought to be one of the factors affecting the level of genetic diversity in populations (Hensen and Oberprieler 2005). As we know, population size can influence the dynamics of plant populations (Li et al 2012). Genetic drift and inbreeding depression often threaten small populations (Chen et al 2003), resulting in low level of genetic variation.…”

“…Due to the impact of genetic drift and inbreeding, species with narrow geographic distributions and smaller-sized individuals generally show lower genetic diversity than more widespread ones (Li, Guan, Yang, Luo, & Chen, 2012;Willi, Van Buskirk, & Hoffmann, 2006). Therefore, endangered and rare species are regarded as being deficient in genetic variation (Hamrick & Godt, 1989).…”
