Genetic and correlation analysis of oleoresin chemical components in slash pine

Abstract: ABSTRACT. This is the first comprehensive study of the genetic analysis of the majority of oleoresin components of slash pine (Pinus elliottii). Pine oleoresin, the resin secreted from the pine tree, is a raw material widely used in industrial products. The objective of this study was to explore the genetic variation and correlation between the major oleoresin components of 50 open pollinated families of slash pine. The individual narrow-sense heritability of the 23 oleoresin components and genetic correlation… Show more

“…The tree height and DBH (diameter at breast height) were measured in the spring of 2019. The collection of oleoresin production was done in August 2019 using the special tube ( Figure 1 A) method of Zhang et al [ 7 ]. The resin collected in the 1180 plastic tubes was measured for resin productivity (RP).…”

“…The main components of turpentine are α-pinene and β-pinene, which especially have a wide range of therapeutic potential [ 5 ] and have huge impact on the value of the resin. The quick and economical identification and analysis of the monoterpene content in different resins is significant for the production and processing of related industrial raw materials [ 6 , 7 ].…”

“…The greater importance of total quantities of allelochemicals in intraspecific differences in host susceptibility to insects than to pathogens may add to the role of environmental mediation. That is, absolute concentrations are often strongly influenced by environmental factors, particularly in heterogeneous natural ecosystems (Herms & Mattson, 1992;Raffa et al, 2008), even in systems where chemical composition (compounds present and their relative proportions) is under strong genetic control (Latta et al, 2003;Zhang et al, 2016).…”

“…However, individual variation in oleoresin yield is rather higher, ranging from 3 kg to 140 kg annually (Xu et al, 2012). Variation in oleoresin yield was also found in Pinus massoniana and Pinus elliottii (Liu et al, 2013;Zhang et al, 2016). Molecular breeding can be used to increase oleoresin yields of Simao pine.…”
