List of Abbreviations AbstractThe effective and efficient management of construction resources is the core of success for any construction project. Traditionally, researchers and industry professionals identify the five main construction resources to include, time, capital, labor, equipment and material. Although, one of the important project resources that have been overlooked during the planning phases of most construction projects is site space. The contractors in Egypt impose serious challenges to plan for material procurement and site logistics due to the insufficiency of construction site space. The aim of this research is to optimize the construction logistics planning cost in Egypt. A literature review is performed on an adapted construction logistics planning model, whereas, implementing and verifying the automated construction logistics planning model using genetic algorithms, applying and validating a case study to the automated construction logistics planning model to the Egyptian industry which is expected to help contractors in Egypt to develop more optimized site layout plans and procurement plans to avoid material shortage and unorganized site layouts that could led to cost overruns.

Strategies for effective management of health and safety in confined site construction

The overall aim of this research is to identify and catalogue the numerous managerial strategies for effective management of health and safety on a confined, urban, construction site. A mixed methods methodology was adopted using interviews and focus group discussions on three selected case studies of confined construction sites. In addition to these, a questionnaire survey was used based on the findings from the interviews and the focus group discussions. The top five key strategies include (1) Employ safe system of work plans to mitigate personnel health and safety issues; (2) Inform personnel, before starting on-site, of the potential issues using site inductions; (3) Effective communication among site personnel; (4) Draft and implement an effective design site layout prior to starting on-site; and (5) Use of banksman (traffic co-ordinator) to segregate personnel from vehicular traffic. The construction sector is one of the leading industries in accident causation and with the continued development and regeneration of our urban centres, confined site construction is quickly becoming the norm -an environment which only fuels accident creation within the construction sector. This research aids on-site management that requires direction and assistance in the identification and implementation of key strategies for the management of health and safety, particularly in confined construction site environments.

Adequate planning of construction sites guarantees better efficiency, productivity, quality on the development of all work activities, optimization of the physical available space, workers' safety and motivation in performing their duties. The objective of this paper is to verify the influence of Lean Construction and LEED Certification on the quality of construction sites. The aspects analyzed were Temporary Facilities, Safety, Material Handling and Storage at construction sites by using a checklist developed by Saurin and Formoso (2006). Forty construction sites in the Metropolitan Region of Fortaleza (MRF), Brazil, were analyzed. The results pointed to a direct relationship between the implementation of Lean Construction and LEED Certification and the overall quality of work at construction sites. The concepts of Lean Construction are linked to a better quality of material handling and storage, temporary facilities and safety at construction sites. Also, the LEED Certification influences to a better quality of material handling and storage. Those two aspects combined make the construction site safer and more efficient, reduce material waste and cost, as well as increase the quality of the services executed.
