Genetic affinity and admixture of northern Thai people along their migration route in northern Thailand: evidence from autosomal STR loci

Abstract: The Khon Mueang (KM) are the largest group of northern Thai people. Our previous mtDNA studies have suggested an admixture process among the KM with the earlier Mon-Khmer-speaking inhabitants of this region. In this study, we evaluate genetic affinities and admixture among 10 KM populations in northern Thailand lying along the historical Yuan migration route, and 10 neighboring populations belonging to 7 additional ethnic groups: Lawa, Mon (Mon-Khmer-speaking groups), Shan, Yuan, Lue, Khuen and Yong (Tai-speak… Show more

“…The DNA samples were obtained from our previous studies with written informed consent [21,23]. We genotyped a total of 104 binary polymorphisms on the Y chromosome (M6, M49, M32, M42, M94, P85, M181, M182, M168, M294, P144, M174, M15, M179, P99, M96, P150, P147, M75, P143, M216, RPS4Y711, M8, M105, M38, M217, M356, P55, M428, P96, M201, P257, M342, P287, M69, M52, P127, P123, M258, U179, M253, M450, P215, P209, M304, M172, M9, P128, M147, P60, P79, P261, P263, M11, M20, M76, M317, M357, P256, M106, M5, M353, P118, P195, M214, M231, P191, P186, M119, P31, M122, P198, M45, P281, M242, M306, M173, P231, M124, P249, P204, P202, M70, M320, M128, P63, Tat, P203, M103, M50, M95, PK4, M111, M88, SRY465, P49, 47z, M324, M121, M164, M159, M7, M134 and M117) according to iPLEX Assay [24] using a Sequenom Mass ARRAY iPLEX Platform (Sequenom, Hamburg, Germany).…”

“…Over the past few decades, the US‐combined DNA index system (CODIS) containing 13 autosomal microsatellites or STRs has been developed as a popular genetic marker broadly used for forensic biology and population genetics due to its hypervariability and ubiquity throughout the human genome (Budowle et al., ; Ellegren, ; Budowle & Chakraborty, ; Rosenberg et al., ; Jobling and Gill, ; Butler, , ). This set of markers has been utilized to infer human population history and relationships among continental populations (Silva et al., ) as well as between geographically contiguous populations (Kutanan et al., , ; Kutanan & Kampuansai, ).…”

“…Previous studies of human genetic diversity in Thailand were done with limited marker sets [22,23], and/or limited sampling (restricted to ethnic minorities); [2,22,24-28]. To better our understanding of mainland Southeast Asian and Thai population genetics, we undertook a study of Thai population genetic structure.…”
