Genes related to flooding tolerance during germination and early growth of weedy rice

Abstract: Evolution of flooding tolerance in weedy rice has occurred in several rice‐growing regions, but the genes related to this process and the environmental effects are unknown. The objective of this study was to analyse the expression of genes related to flooding tolerance in response to temperature and flooding during the initial establishment of weedy rice. The experiments were carried out with rice cultivars IRGA 417 and Nipponbare, which are sensitive to flooding, and weedy rice ITJ03 and AV04 genotypes that h… Show more

“…Therefore, with less cellular energy utilization and shortage of carbohydrate in downstream growth period, the plants may hinder to growth and development [82]. With quiescence strategy plants are strengthened with respiration just for shake of viability of tissues under constrain of anoxia and hypoxia rather than growth respiration which ensure the overall realization of adequate growth [83]. Plants are characterized with delayed flowering, down regulation of cell wall loosening, down regulation of ET production etc.…”

“…Another important strategy to control weedy rice is the flooding. However, it was reported weedy rice biotype tolerant to flooding (KASPARY et al, 2020), increasing the weed competitive ability and reducing crop yield. Therefore, weedy rice has been reported as a highly competitive and harmful weed to the cultivated rice, with losses from 6% to 49%, depending on the biotype (SHIVRAIN et al, 2009).…”
