Genes Encoding Proteins Homologous to Halobacterial Gvps N, J, K, F & L are Located Downstream ofgvpCin the CyanobacteriumAnabaena flos-aquae

Abstract: Only two gas vesicle genes have been previously identified in the cyanobacteria, gvpA and gvpC, both of which encode structural gas vesicle proteins. Analysis of the nucleotide sequence immediately downstream of gvpC in the cyanobacterium Anabaena flos-aquae has revealed the presence of 4 ORFs (open reading frames) the products of which share significant homology with a number of the gene products derived from halobacterial gvp gene clusters. In halobacteria the gas vesicle gene clusters consist of 14 genes in… Show more

“…there are 10 different gvp genes in a linear cluster gvpA, C, N, J, X, K, F/L, G, V, W (Mlouka et al, 2004;Dunton & Walsby, 2005). In A. flos-aquae, nine of the same genes are found in the same order, but one, gvpX, is absent (see Kinsman & Hayes, 1997, and GenBank accession no. U17109).…”

“…The third copy of gvpC is followed by the gvpN and gvpJ genes. A similar order of the last copies of gvpA and gvpC and of gvpN and gvpJ has been found in other cyanobacterial genera, such as Anabaena (Kinsman & Hayes, 1997), Pseudanabaena (Albouy et al, 2001) and Microcystis (Mlouka et al, 2004).…”

“…GvpA and gvpC are not the only genes involved in gas vesicle formation. In cyanobacteria up to eight other gas vesicle genes have been identified (Kinsman & Hayes, 1997;Albouy et al, 2001;Mlouka et al, 2004). In the case of halophilic archaea as many as 12 additional genes have been found (DasSarma & Arora, 1997;Pfeifer et al, 1997).…”
