Polychaete systematics: Past and present

In this paper, we first demonstrate the historical background for the current unsatisfactory state of systematics of the polychaetes. We then briefly discuss our knowledge of internal and external structures. A review of the polychaete families makes up the third section; 81 families are treated in detail. Five families have been recently synonymized with others, and six families are too poorly known to be sufficiently characterized. Fossil polychaetes are briefly mentioned, with specific attention to problems associated with incorporating them in recent systematics.The traditional separation in 'errant' and 'sedentary' polychaetes has increasingly become recognized as being unsatisfactory; however, the current trend towards grouping the polychaetes in many orders without specifying the relationships among the orders, is no more satisfactory. The lack of consistent morphological information is a major source of uncertainty. Intensive morphological studies should remove terminological ambiguities and alleviate some of the problems.

Ten species of onuphid polychaetes were identified from the sublitoral ofUbatuba, on lhe coast ofthe state ofSào Paulo, Brazil: Diopatra cuprea (Bosc, 1802); Diopatra tridentala Hartrnan, 1944; Kinbergonuphis dijJicilis (Fauchald, 1982); Kinbergonuphis fauchaldi Lana, 1991; Kinbergonuphis orensanzi (Fauchald, 1982); Kinbergonuphis lenuis (Hansen, 1882); Mooreonuphis nebulosa (Moore, 1911); Mooreonuphis pallidula (Hartman, 1965); Mooreonuphis inlermedia (Kinberg, 1865); Onuphis dibranchiata Wil1ey, 1905. A discussion on the characteristics of the species found and related species is a1so provided.KEY WORDS. Segmento peristomial ápodo pode conter um par de cirros tentaculares (cirros occipitais). Convém mencionar que diagnoses mais antigas porém de consulta habitual (FAUVEL 1923;DAY 1967 entre outros), referem-se à presença de sete antenas, duas das quais atualmente caracterizadas como palpos frontais.Parapódios sub-birremes, devido ao reduzido notopódio, representado pelo cirro dorsal. Parapódios anteriores (1-8) estruturalmente diferentes quanto à orientação, comprimento, desenvolvimento do lobo parapodial e tipo de cerdas. Cirros dorsais subulados, normalmente presentes em todos os setígeros, ventrais,subulados ou digitiformes nos parapódios anteriores e em forma de "almofadas" ventrais glandulares, nos demais. Brânquias presentes na maioria das espécies, podendo ser simples, ramificadas, pectinadas ou espiraladas; dois ou quatro cirras anais.

Position and Delineation of Chrysopetalidae and Hesionidae (Annelida, Polychaeta, Phyllodocida)

Previous studies suggest that the polychaete taxa Hesionidae and Chrysopetalidae may not represent separate groups, that Pilargidae constitute a subgroup within Hesionidae, and that Hesionides and Microphthalmus are highly derived hesionids. Phylogenetic systematic analyses of Phyllodocida and the subgroup Nereidiformia are presented in order to clarify the position and delineation of these taxa. The phyllodocida analysis includes 18 families representing the majority of the taxa in the group, is rooted with Onuphidae, and is based on 42 absent/ present coded morphological characters, obtained mainly from literature. All 69 resulting shortest trees include the clade (Chrysopetalidae, Nereididae, Hesionidae), but with either Syllidae, Nautiliniellidae, Pilargidae or (Aphroditiformia, Pisionidae) as sister. Inand outgroup taxon selection for the Nereidiformia study is dictated by the outcome of Phyllodocida analysis, with scores based on examined species of two chrysopetalids, four hesionids, one nereid, one pilargid, one pisionid, one syllid, plus the putative hesionids Hesionides arenaria and Microphthalmus sp. It is based on 46 absent/present coded morphological characters. Two equally parsimonious trees indicate that chrysopetalids and hesionids are well delineated, that pilargids and hesionids are non-overlapping, and that Microphthalmus and Hesionides are not hesionids.
