Abstract. Today's challenges for language development include language extension and composition, as well as the use of diverse notations. A promising approach is projectional editing, a technique to directly manipulate the abstract syntax tree of a program, without relying on parsers. Its potential lies in the ability to combine diverse notational styles -such as text, symbols, tables, and graphics -and the support for a wide range of composition techniques. However, projectional editing is often perceived as problematic for developers. Expressed drawbacks include the unfamiliar editing experience and challenges in the integration with existing infrastructure. In this paper we investigate the usability of projectional editors. We systematically identify usability issues resulting from the architecture. We use JetBrains Meta Programming System (MPS) as a case study. The case study discusses the concepts that MPS incorporates to address the identified issues, evaluates effectiveness of these concepts by surveying professional developers, and reports industrial experiences from realizing large-scale systems. Our results show that the benefits of flexible language composition and diverse notations come at the cost of serious usability issues -which, however, can be effectively mitigated with facilities that emulate editing experience of parser-based editors.

El desarrollo de aplicaciones para Grid computing, puede beneficiarse si se aplican enfoques emergentes de Ingeniería de Software basados en la Separación Avanzada de Concerns. En el presente trabajo analizamos los más representativos, de qué manera se aplicaron en el área de Grid computing. Los enfoques abordados incluyen Desarrollo de Software Dirigido por Mo-delos, Desarrollo de Software Basado en Componentes, Desarrollo de Software Orientado a Aspectos, Ingeniería de Línea de Productos y Desarrollo de Software Orientado a Features. Se analizan y comparan estos enfoques de Separación Avanzada de Concerns para determinar de qué manera y en qué grado cada uno de ellos satisfacen las necesidades que se requieren para desarrollo de aplicaciones para Grid computing.

Abstract. Product line developers must ensure that existing and new features work in all products. Adding to or changing a product line might break some of its features. In this paper, we present a technique for automatic and agile interaction testing for product lines. The technique enables developers to know if features work together with other features in a product line, and it blends well into a process of continuous integration. The technique is evaluated with two industrial applications, testing a product line of safety devices and the Eclipse IDEs. The first case shows how existing test suites are applied to the products of a 2-wise covering array to identify two interaction faults. The second case shows how over 400,000 test executions are performed on the products of a 2-wise covering array using over 40,000 existing automatic tests to identify potential interactions faults.
