Generation of Defects Due to Machining of TiAl Intermetallic Compound and Their Effects on Mechanical Strength

Abstract: The generation of machining defects and their effect on bending strength characteristics are discussed with respect to a TiAl intermetallic compound, which is attracting much attention as a high-temperature structural material because of its high specific strength. The discussion focuses on the mechanism of the formation of edge chipping and machined surface cracks during cutting of a TiAl intermetallic compound. Also, some effects of these machining defects on the bending strength are clarified. The compariso… Show more

“…Although there is an attempt of shaping process by precision casting, finish by cutting is still necessary for high accuracy. Furusawa et al reported that when lamellar structure had been cut, surface defects observed, which oriented perpendicular to the cutting direction on machined surface [2]. It was also pointed out that these defects weaken bending strength remarkably.…”

“…The MAZ also formed with unique properties. In the samples subjected to HSM, the thickness of PDD was very small compared with the workpieces subjected to a conventional cutting condition such as turning and grinding [63,64]. Hence, surface and subsurface micro hardness and nanohardness was investigated in samples with various cutting conditions.…”
