Generalized equations for predicting body density of men

Abstract: I. Skinfold thickness, body circumferences and body density were measured in samples of 308 and ninetyfive adult men ranging in age from 18 to 61 years.2. Using the sample of 308 men, multiple regression equations were calculated to estimate body density using either the quadratic or log form of the sum of skinfolds, in combination with age, waist and forearm circumference.3. The multiple correlations for the equations exceeded 0.90 with standard errors of approximately +oao73 g/ml.4. The regression equations … Show more

“…Our sample was very similar to that of Jackson and Pollock (1978) from which the professionally recommended JP7 equation was developed. For example, age, height, and weight from the current study are 32.1711.0 y, 178.87 6.9 cm, and 82.3714.1 kg, compared to 32.6710.8 y, 179.07 6.5 cm, and 74.8711.8 kg in the Jackson and Pollock study.…”

“…Body density was determined by hydrostatic weighing [13] and was also estimated from an equation that uses chest, abdomen, and thigh skinfold thicknesses [14]. Body composition was estimated from body density according to the equation of Siri [15], yielding percent body fat, fat body mass, and lean (non-fat) body mass.…”
