Generalized Circuit Model of Shielded Capacitive Power Transfer

Abstract: A capacitive power transfer (CPT) system wirelessly transfers energy between coupling plates and performance issues related to CPT systems are resonance conditions, matching impedance, voltage stress, and power loss. A generalized circuit model is proposed for shielded capacitive power transfer (S-CPT) using an algebraic method. The proposed generalized S-CPT model is analyzed based on the symmetric and asymmetric configurations, and the relationship between the parameters of S-CPT is obtained with respect to … Show more

“…This structure is a four-plate parallel structure with two extra shielding plates to provide better protection against electric fields, as seen in Figure 14 d. The additional plates do not take part in the power transfer and are only coupled via parasitic capacitance. Studies have shown that this approach improves safety and efficiency [ 23 , 24 , 25 , 26 ].…”

“…When the plate structures become more complex, as is the case of, e.g., six-plate structure or the matrix structure, a pi-model is no longer suited to analyze the characteristics of the coupling structure [50,55]. Moreover, determining or measuring the mutual capacitance between any two plates for a complex arrangement is far from straightforward.…”

“…The main purpose of the extra shielding part is to reduce the electric field emissions. The studies [47,50,55,62] have shown that this six-plate structure improves the system safety and efficiency. As there are two more plates, the coupling model of the six-plate structure consists of fifteen capacitances which makes the analysis of the coupling more complicated as discussed in Section 2.2.…”

“…Compared to the traditional plug-in charger, the wireless power transfer (WPT) technique possesses the advantages of convenience, safety, and isolation [1,2]. The inductive power transfer (IPT) technique [3][4][5] and capacitive power transfer (CPT) technique [6][7][8] are two main solutions of WPT. The coupler of IPT is two physically separated coils of a loosely coupled transformer.…”
