Gene‐flow patterns in Atlantic and Mediterranean populations of the Lusitanian sea star Asterina gibbosa

Abstract: In this study, the population structure of the Lusitanian sea star Asterina gibbosa was assessed using amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP). One hundred and twenty-two AFLP loci were analysed in 159 individuals from eight populations from across the species' range and revealed high levels of genetic diversity, with all individuals but two harbouring a unique banding pattern. As reported for other marine invertebrates, we found high levels of genetic differentiation between the Atlantic and Mediterrane… Show more

“…Alguns estudos recentes vêm comparando os resultados obtidos pelo HICKORY com os dados gerados pelo AMOVA, em diferentes espécies, e tem-se verificado, ao final, certa coerência entre esses aplicativos (Juan et al, 2004;Baus et al, 2005;Sica et al, 2005). Todavia, no presente trabalho, os resultados encontrados com o HICKORY não foram congruentes com os dados gerados pelo AMOVA.…”

“…Since estimates of F IS based on dominant markers must be taken with caution, we used the f-free analysis to calculate estimates of O -II . The models were evaluated based on the measures of deviance information criterion (DIC) to decide which model is preferred (smaller DIC values indicate a better fit) (Baus et al 2005;Zhang et al 2007). …”

“…The Algarve coast (southern Portugal, north-eastern Atlantic) presents a rich fauna with biogeographic affinities with the Mediterranean Sea, the Lusitanian, the west African Transition, Northern European Seas and Western Atlantic provinces (sensu Spalding et al 2007;Souto et al 2010;Levy et al 2011), because of the proximity to the Strait of Gibraltar (Baus et al 2005; and references therein) and the confluence of oceanic currents (Cherubin et al 2000;Pérez et al 2001;Coelho et al 2002;Martins et al 2002). However, the gorgonian populations of southern Portugal are poorly described, especially compared to the Mediterranean, where in the past few years, several studies have been performed in shallow sub-littoral waters, gathering a large amount of biological and ecological information, and building predictive models to be used in conservation plans (Linares et al 2007(Linares et al , 2008bBramanti et al 2009).…”
