Resumo -O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a variabilidade genética de estoques comerciais do camarão Litopenaeus vannamei, por meio de marcadores RAPD e diferentes métodos estatísticos de análises, em Canavieiras, BA. Vinte primers foram utilizados para a obtenção de 59 marcadores polimórficos. A análise com o programa AMOVA evidenciou diferenciação genética significativa entre os estoques, com Φ ST = 0,186 (p<0,001). Entretanto, as análises obtidas com o programa HICKORY sugeriram não existir estruturação (θ β = 0,002), mas considerável taxa de endogamia dentro dos estoques, em razão, provavelmente, do cruzamento entre indivíduos geneticamente mais similares (f = 0,729). Testes com bootstrap mostraram 48 como o número mínimo de marcadores RAPD adequados para estudos de variabilidade genética nessa espécie. Pelo dendrograma, gerado a partir da matriz de similaridade de Jaccard (Sj), observou-se que nos três estoques comerciais estudados existem animais geneticamente distintos.Termos para indexação: marcadores moleculares, variabilidade genética, aqüicultura, RAPD. Genetic diversity of Litopenaeus vannamei cultivated in Bahia State, BrazilAbstract -The objective of this work was to evaluate the genetic variability of commercial stocks of shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei, using RAPD markers and different statistical methods of analysis in Canavieiras, BA, Brazil. Twenty primers were used to obtain 59 polymorphic markers. A significant differentiation among stocks, with Φ ST = 0.186 (p<0.001), was observed by analysis with the software AMOVA. However, an analysis with the software HICKORY suggested no genetic structure (θ β = 0.002), but considerable inbreeding within stocks, possibly due to consanguineous crossings (f = 0.729). Statistical tests with bootstrap indicated 48 as the minimum number of RAPD markers suitable for studies on genetic variability of this species. By the dendrogram produced from the Jaccard similarity matrix, it was observed that the analyzed stocks are composed of genetically different individuals.

Echinacea laevigata (Boynton and Beadle) Blake is a federally endangered flowering plant species restricted to four states in the southeastern United States.To determine the population structure and outcrossing rate across the range of the species, we conducted AFLP analysis using four primer combinations for 22 populations. The genetic diversity of this species was high based on the level of polymorphic loci (200 of 210 loci; 95.24%) and Nei's gene diversity (ranging from 0.1398 to 0.2606; overall 0.2611). There was significant population genetic differentiation (G ST = 0.294; O -II = 0.218 from the Bayesian f = 0 model). Results from the AMOVA analysis suggest that a majority of the genetic variance is attributed to variation within populations (70.26%), which is also evident from the PCoA. However, 82% of individuals were assigned back to the original population based on the results of the assignment test. An isolation by distance analysis indicated that genetic differentiation among populations was a function of geographic distance, although long-distance gene dispersal between some populations was suggested from an analysis of relatedness between populations using the neighbor-joining method. An estimate of the outcrossing rate based on genotypes of progenies from six of the 22 populations using the multilocus method from the program MLTR ranged from 0.780 to 0.912, suggesting that the species is predominantly outcrossing. These results are encouraging for conservation, signifying that populations may persist due to continued genetic exchange sustained by the outcrossing mating system of the species.

“…The Algarve coast (southern Portugal, north-eastern Atlantic) presents a rich fauna with biogeographic affinities with the Mediterranean Sea, the Lusitanian, the west African Transition, Northern European Seas and Western Atlantic provinces (sensu Spalding et al 2007;Souto et al 2010;Levy et al 2011), because of the proximity to the Strait of Gibraltar (Baus et al 2005; and references therein) and the confluence of oceanic currents (Cherubin et al 2000;Pérez et al 2001;Coelho et al 2002;Martins et al 2002). The ecological role of gorgonians for marine rocky bottoms is worldwide recognized, but the information on the distribution patterns of NE Atlantic temperate species is insufficient, considering current global, regional and local threats. To overcome the lack of information on the spatial distribution patterns of gorgonians in south Portugal, in 2009/2010, the occurrence and abundance of gorgonian species in rocky bottoms were quantified over more than 25 km of coast (37.1°N/8.6°W) down to 30 m depth. Eunicella labiata, Eunicella gazella, Eunicella verrucosa and Leptogorgia sarmentosa were abundant and frequent in the studied area, while Leptogorgia lusitanica was less abundant. All species evidenced a similar depth pattern, that is abundance significantly increased with depth below 15 m. At shallower waters (up to 15 m), the distribution of gorgonians may be constrained by abiotic factors and competition with algae. Indeed, the abundance of gorgonians was negatively correlated with the percentage cover of algae along the depth gradient, but gorgonians and sponges coexist. Competition among gorgonian species also seems to be low in this area because of the similarity in the abundance pattern observed for the most abundant species and also their high association. In NE Atlantic shallow temperate rocky bottoms, the distribution of gorgonians seems to be influenced by environmental factors and biological interactions, namely competition (algae) and coexistence (sponges and other gorgonians).
