Gene Flow and Genetic Structure Reveal Reduced Diversity between Generations of a Tropical Tree, Manilkara multifida Penn., in Atlantic Forest Fragments

Abstract: The Atlantic Forest remnants in southern Bahia, Brazil, contain large tree species that have suffered disturbances in recent decades. Anthropogenic activities have led to a decrease in the population of many tree species and a loss of alleles that can maintain the evolutionary fitness of their populations. This study assessed patterns of genetic diversity, spatial genetic structure, and genetic structure among Manilkara multifida Penn. populations, comparing the genetic parameters of adult and juvenile trees. … Show more

“…Other factors that must be taken into account to explain this result are: the time taken the sampled area has been protected; the original genetic diversity before the area was protected and the type of molecular marker used for the analysis. Waqar et al (2021 ), studying the genetic diversity of a tropical tree in protected areas located in Atlantic Forest fragments, observed a substantial decay in genetic variability between generations, indicating the need to implement measures to improve habitat protection and expand forest restoration projects. Ballesteros-Mejia et al .…”

“…Nontarget creatures, such as beneficial insects, other animals, and plants, could be adversely affected by poisonous substances and other factors (EC-ETHICS-GROUP, 2021). The discharge of the gene-edited organisms may have detrimental effects on biodiversity preservation and ecological instability due to vertical gene transfer and introgression of genetic material into wild populations (Waqar et al, 2021). Functional feed is not subject to any regulatory framework, whereas functional food items are.…”

“…Among the various kinds of molecular markers, microsatellite markers have the favorable characteristics of co-dominant inheritance, high polymorphism, good repeatability, and regular distribution 26 , 27 . Consequently, microsatellite markers are widely applied to detect the genetic diversity of plants 28 31 , particularly in genus Prunus 21 , 32 34 .…”
