Previous research has shown that musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are one of the barriers for women to adopting tea-picking mechanization technology. Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are defined as a group of injuries that affect the musculoskeletal system including nerves, tendons, muscles, and supporting structures. MSDs are also referred to as injuries due to overactivity or from using a device excessively. Some research results significantly show that gender greatly affects the level of risk of autonomic complaints and that women are more likely to show musculoskeletal symptoms than men. This study examines the comparison of musculoskeletal disorders due to the use of tea picking machines for male and female pickers. Data collection on musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) complaints was carried out using the Nordic Body Map instrument, in the form of an open questionnaire by interviewing mechanical tea pickers directly. From the data obtained, the average difference in scores for male mechanical tea pickers is 5.3 while the average difference in scores for female mechanical tea pickers is 9. This means that the average female mechanical tea pickers experience musculoskeletal complaints 70% more height than male mechanical tea pickers. MSDs complaints comparison between male and female tea pickers with NBM measurement is 5:9. In conclusion, female mechanical tea pickers suffer from MSDs almost twice as much as males. Considering that the majority of tea pickers are women, gender-responsive machine design interventions are needed.

This paper reflects on the changes induced by modifications in the Rainforest Alliance certification system that require wage transparency from plantation owners, a comparison with the local living wage benchmark, and a wage improvement plan. The paper synthesises the findings of four case studies in Brazil, Colombia, Indonesia, and Kenya, covering plantations of coffee, bananas, and tea. It finds that the socio-technological proposition is highly contested in the sector. Certification holders fear the costs of the wage improvement plans without credible long-term commitments from downstream firms and brands to support them financially. The effects of the change in the Rainforest Alliance 2020 Sustainable Agriculture Standard, Farm Requirements, Version 1.2 (RA2020) are still limited and largely constrained to sectors where downstream buyers have piloted living wage premium modalities. The paper highlights the limits to the private regulation of wages in a segmented value chain and recommends a standard volume-based living wage premium paid by international brands, which is transferred to local committees with producer and worker representatives that could manage a cash transfer system using mobile banking and support collective bargaining.

Kalijudan merupakan salah satu kelurahan di Surabaya dengan jumlah penduduk sebanyak 14.282 orang dan luas wilayah 131.354 hektar di mana 63,4% wilayah berupa daratan. Letak Kalijudan di tengah Kota Surabaya dengan jumlah penduduk yang besar dan luas wilayah terbatas, menyebabkan masyarakat Kalijudan harus bijak dan kreatif dalam menggunakan lahan. Urban farming dengan vertipot (VP) merupakan salah satu alternatif dalam pemberdayaan pangan keluarga di era pandemi, sekaligus merupakan upaya pengelolaan sampah di lingkungan keluarga. Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat (PkM) ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan pengetahuan dan pemahaman masyarakat melalui kegiatan pelatihan tentang vertical garden (VG) terutama yang menggunakan wadah pot atau yang dikenal dengan vertipot (VP). Sasaran pelatihan adalah ibu-ibu warga Kalijudan. Karakteristik masyarakat Kalijudan yang sebagian besar (50,1%) penduduknya adalah perempuan sangat sesuai dalam kegiatan urban farming mengingat perempuan dipandang memiliki ketelitian, keterampilan, dan kecermatan yang lebih dibandingkan laki-laki selama proses berkebun. Materi diberikan oleh Tim PkM Politeknik Perkapalan Negeri Surabaya (PPNS) meliputi pembuatan wadah/pot untuk menanam tanaman pangan yang memanfaatkan barang bekas di sektor rumah tangga, pembuatan media tanam, dan perawatan tanaman. Pot memanfaatkan kaleng plastik bekas cat yang diberi lubang sebagai tempat tumbuhnya tanaman. Kaleng plastik disusun 3 (tiga) tingkatan, yang di dalamnya diberi pipa PVC dengan diameter 4 inci. Pipa PVC digunakan untuk meletakkan sampah organik yang pada umumya diperoleh masyarakat dari sampah dapur. Air lindi yang keluar dari sampah tersebut dimanfaatkan tanaman sebagai nutrisi untuk tumbuh dan berkembang. Hal ini karena lindi mengandung unsur-unsur makro dan mikro nutrient yang dibutuhkan tanaman sebagai sumber nutrisi, antara lain adalah Nitrogen (10-600 mg/lt), Amonium Nitrogen (10-800 mg/lt), Nitrat (5-40 mg/lt), total Fosfor (1-70 mg/lt), total Fe (50-600 mg/lt).
