Gender equality, part‐time work and segregation in Europe

Abstract: This article shows how both segregation by sex and segregation by hours shape the occupational space of part‐time workers. The level of segregation by sex varies according to the shares of full‐time and part‐time work in total employment, and the trade‐off between increasing the volume of female employment and decreasing segregation by sex is much stronger for full‐time work. The author argues that there is less segregation by sex in part‐time work than in full‐time work, and that it is the gap between the vol… Show more

“…Given the spatial aspects of job search, conditions in the local labour market will feed through to commute times; poorer local job prospects will force workers to travel farther to seek a job, or to obtain better wages or terms and conditions. In addition, the unequal distribution of male and female employment across the occupational and industrial structure, and in particular the segregation of women into a narrower range of employment than men (Sparreboom, 2014;Pan, 2015), means that it is necessary to account for the gendered nature of local labour markets in order to properly take account of the local conditions faced by both spouses.…”

“…Part-time workers are more likely to be mismatched (Column 1). Occupational choices in part-time work could be more limited, raising the probability of over-skilling and a switch from full-time to part-time employment could entail occupational downgrading (Sparreboom, 2014;Connolly and Gregory, 2008). 24 Finally, workers in the public sector are less likely to be mismatched in terms of skills (Column 1).…”
