Consonni et al 29 using data from Mesothelioma Registries of two large Italian regions compared men (more exposed) with women (less exposed) and estimated the advancement of incidence rates in the range from 7 years at age 45 to 11.5 years at age 75. Assuming that occupational asbestos exposure started on average at age 20 years, their results were not much different from ours but direct comparison is not possible given the absence of quantitative exposure estimates in their study.…”

Subjects without data on gender, date of birth and date of enrolment in the factory had been excluded from the cohorts at the beginning of the cohort formation 29. Two thousand two hundred one records were further excluded, for first employment after 1992 (approval of the asbestos ban in Italy), conflicting dates, incomplete working periods or unlikely age at hiring or end of employment.…”
