Gemfibrozil reduces postprandial lipemia in non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus.

Abstract: The effect of gemfibrozil on postprandial lipoprotein metabolism was investigated in a 12-week, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in 20 non-insulin-dependent diabetic patients with moderate hypertrigryceridemia. The patients were given a meal containing 78 g of fat and 345,000 units of vitamin A to label chylomicrons and their remnants. Plasma obtained at various times during the fat-load test was separated into six fractions by gradient-density ultracentrifugation. Gemfibrozil reduced the pos… Show more

“…The improvement in clearance in the healthy women would be expected to reduce the atherosclerotic risk in healthy premenopausal women, which is a benefit not seen in our diabetic patients. However, both lifestyle (28,29) and pharmacological (30,31) intervention may improve chylomicron clearance, so women with diabetes may particularly benefit from such measures.…”

“…Serum total cholesterol and TG were determined with automated enzymatic methods. 29 Serum apoB was measured by an immunochemical assay (Orion Diagnostica). Lipoprotein fractions, LDL, HDL, and serum apo concentrations were determined by an immunoturbidimetric method with a commercially available kit (Boehringer Mannheim) based on sequential flotation as described.…”
