GelSight Fin Ray: Incorporating Tactile Sensing into a Soft Compliant Robotic Gripper

Abstract: To adapt to constantly changing environments and be safe for human interaction, robots should have compliant and soft characteristics as well as the ability to sense the world around them. Even so, the incorporation of tactile sensing into a soft compliant robot, like the Fin Ray finger, is difficult due to its deformable structure. Not only does the frame need to be modified to allow room for a vision sensor, which enables intricate tactile sensing, the robot must also retain its original mechanically complia… Show more

“…In other words, it takes work to guarantee the accuracy of 2D MDM in terms of details. From this point of view, 2D MDM methods tend to be more suitable for measuring overall contact properties (e.g., concentrated forces and moments [67], [74]). In addition, different mapping models need to be trained to reconstruct the tactile information for each modality, such as morphology, slip, and contact force distribution.…”

“…178 Figure 11(C), “Tactile”, shows a robotic gripper with a GelSight sensor at the tips of a fin ray gripper. 170 A benefit of this sensing approach is that the compliant nature of the elastomer enables sensing as it deforms around a grasped object. Such compliance is necessary for robust high-speed grasping.…”

“…Another promising alternative is the GelSight technology, which consists of a combination of computer vision and soft materials for tactile reconstruction ( Johnson and Adelson, 2009 ). Recently, Liu and Adelson presented a Fin Ray ® gripper with integrated a GelSight sensor to sense object orientation and deformation fields while grasping an object, performing reorientation and placement of a delicate object such as a wine glass ( Liu and Adelson, 2022 ).…”
