Gelatin in replacement of bovine heart in feed training ofLophiosilurus alexandri in different water salinities

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate commercial gelatin in the total replacement of bovine heart in feed training of "pacamã" Lophiosilurus alexandri in different water salinities. A completely randomized experimental design, in a 2 × 3 factorial arrangement, was performed using two types of moist ingredients (bovine heart and gelatin) and three water salinities (0.0; 2.0 and 4.0 g of salt L -1 ) with three replications.Juveniles (2.39 ± 0.08 cm standard length and 0.20 ± 0.03 g of weight) were conditioned to… Show more

“…The transition to compound diets for early juveniles described by Luz et al 53 is summarised in Table 8 (73% survival at the end of this period). Instead of using bovine heart, some authors have successfully used commercial gelatine powder (Gelita ® ) 184 . In addition, salinity values of 4 g NaCl L −1 during this step should be avoided, as it reduces larval survival.…”

“…Lophiosilurus alexandri is a Neotropical catfish species with great potential for aquaculture (Kitagawa et al, 2015; Ribeiro et al, 2019) due to its favourable production characteristics, such as ease of artificial propagation (Costa et al, 2015; Luz & Santos, 2008), acceptance of artificial diets (Salaro et al, 2015) and quality of meat without intramuscular bones (Gonçalves Junior et al, 2019; Mattioli et al, 2017). Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the OEO ( Origanum vulgare ) dietary supplementation for the catfish L .…”

“…However, there is no information regarding the pharmacological effects of the mucus produced by the carnivorous freshwater fish Lophiosilurus alexandri, also known as pacamã. This is the largest species of the pseudopimelodidae family, being able to reach 500 mm in length (Britski et al ., 1986) and between 4 to 8 kg in body mass (Sato et al ., 2006;Salaro et al ., 2015). Endemic to the San Francisco River (Shibata, 2003), one of the longest rivers in Brazil spanning about 2,756 km (Guimarães, Landau & Barros, 2011), this ecosystem is home to a rich and diversified, however poorly studied, ichthyofauna (Barbosa et al ., 2017) regarding the occurrence of biologically active compounds.…”
