Catfish (Siluriformes) are important species for aquaculture worldwide, with an annual production in 2018 of ca. 6 million t. This review focuses on reassessing larval development, first feeding, and early rearing practices of the most important farmed catfish species, along with some candidate species for aquaculture diversification: Pangasianodon hypophthalmus (Pangasiidae), Clarias gariepinus (Clariidae), Ictalurus punctatus (Ictaluridae), Pseudoplatystoma spp. (Pimelodidae), Heteropneustes fossilis (Heteropneustidae), Rhamdia quelen (Heptapteridae), Ompok bimaculatus (Siluridae), and Lophiosilurus alexandri (Pseudopimelodidade). These species are initially reared indoors from one day to two weeks and are then transferred to fertilised outdoor ponds where they either feed on natural zooplankton or compound feeds. With the exception of C. gariepinus, I. punctatus, R. quelen and P. hypophthalmus, consistent and reliable fry production is a bottleneck that limits the expansion of farming of other species, such as Pseudoplatystoma spp., H. fossilis, O. bimaculatus, and L. alexandri. Rearing systems (extensive, semi‐extensive, intensive) and feeding protocols vary with species and geographical regions. Cannibalism and size heterogeneity are common, and these features create problems for larval and fry rearing of catfish species. Information about their nutritional requirements is required for the formulation of compound feeds that can guarantee high survival and good growth of catfish fries. However, such knowledge for most species is scarce, although some data are available for I. punctatus. Further genomic resources might allow fine‐tuning rearing success. This review describes some successes in this field, and also highlights gaps in knowledge to guide future research that can promote the development of catfish aquaculture.

The use of essential oils (EO's) as feed additive has been explored as tool to improve fish growth and health. The aim of this study was to evaluate the oregano essential oil (OEO) (Origanum vulgare) dietary supplementation for the catfish Lophiosilurus alexandri. Four diets supplemented with different OEO levels (0.0, 1.0, 2.0 and 4.0 g kg−1) were evaluated in a feed trial conducted with fish of 15.7 ± 1.8 g and 9.5 ± 0.45 cm for 13 weeks. Were evaluated growth performance, biochemical parameters, intestinal histomorphometry, whole‐body composition and muscle growth. Polynomial analysis showed that weight gain, length gain and specific growth rate were improved in fish fed with OEO supplemented diets, being 2.37, 2.56 and 2.33 g kg−1 the respective levels that maximize these variables. Plasma glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL and HDL increased with OEO levels between 1.80–2.47 g kg−1. Intestinal histomorphometry was not affected by OEO. Body protein content and hyperplasic muscle fibres were maximized with 2.10 and 2.25 g kg−1 OEO, respectively. Body moisture, total lipids, ash and hypertrophic muscle fibres were not affected by OEO. In conclusion, dietary supplementation with 2.10–2.56 g kg−1 OEO improves growth performance, body protein retention and muscle growth of L. alexandri.

Recently, fish byproducts have been appraised as a source of structurally diverse bioactive compounds. In this context, fish mucus has revealed a myriad of pharmacological activities. This study describes a new bioactive molecule release system composed of protein nanoparticles from pacamã (Lophiosilurus alexandri) mucus, an endemic fish to the São Francisco River (Brazil). The process of obtaining and applying these nanoparticles, composed of proteins present in the pacamã mucus, as biocompatible carriers of bioactive molecules is also addressed herein. Therefore, the external mucus of the fish was collected, lyophilized and hydrated in deionized water containing the template molecule. After pH adjustment to 7.5, followed by sonication and centrifugation, the formed nanoparticles were collected in the supernatant. Additionally, the mucus and the particles were characterized, and pharmacological effects were evaluated regarding their antifungal, antibacterial, anticancer, anti or pro-inflammatory and antinociceptive proprieties. NP-Mucus did not exhibit antibacterial activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa or Staphylococcus aureus. However, it showed potential effects against Candida albicans with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 1 µg/mL, and significant pro-inflammatory role, reflected by cellular recruitment activity and healing effects. Therefore, future studies are now needed in order to identify specific compounds in NP-mucus responsible for the observed effects in order to provide new pharmacological and therapeutic strategies.
