GC-MS Analysis of Potentially Volatile Compounds of Pleurotus ostreatus Polar Extract: In vitro Antimicrobial, Cytotoxic, Immunomodulatory, and Antioxidant Activities

Abstract: One strategy to manage resistant pathogens and develop potential anticancer drugs is the search for new, promising, and cost-effective medicinal benefits in the field of bioactive metabolites derived from mushrooms. In the current study, Egyptian cultivated Pleurotus ostreatus fruiting bodies polar extract was prepared to evaluate its antimicrobial activities as well as its cytotoxic effect on various cancer cell lines. The Pleurotus ostreatus polar extract (PoPE) was characterized by its phenolic and flavonoi… Show more

“…Each bacterium was then inoculated with a single colony and cultivated for 24 h at 37 °C in a nutrient broth medium. The antibacterial activities of plants’ extracts were studied using the well diffusion technique, as explained by [ 59 ]. Plates (9 mm) containing 20 mL of nutritional agar medium were inoculated with 100 µL of the bacterial suspension (1 × 106 CFU/mL).…”

“…Volatile secondary metabolites play a vital pharmaceutical role in addition to contributing aroma and avor of the mushroom. Various types of these volatile metabolites found in the present study are reported to function as anticancer, anti-in ammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant, and other health-related activities (Aparna et al 2012;Yu et al 2013;Kim et al 2020;Hamad et al 2022). Eight volatile compounds are present commonly in all the stains of P. djamor and some other speci c metabolites are found in each strain of P. djamor.…”

“…According to Hamad et al [ 19 ], the antibacterial and anticandidal activities of the crude extract were evaluated as follows: 100 μL of the previously cultured bacterial and Candida albicans suspensions, each containing 1 × 10 8 CFU/mL (OD 600 ~0.1) were distributed onto the surfaces of nutrient agar and PDA media, respectively. A 6-mm sterile cork borer was used to produce wells in the agar plates.…”
