Gastroprotective Activity of Sterculia striata A. St. Hil. & Naudin (Malvaceae) in Rodents

Abstract: The Sterculia striata ethanolic extract (Ss-EtOH) inhibited gastric lesions induced by ethanol, HCl/ethanol, and ischemia/reperfusion, but not those induced by indomethacin, and did not alter the gastric secretion. Ss-EtOH restored the catalase activity and content of nonprotein sulfhydryl groups in the stomach of mice treated with ethanol. The gastroprotection induced by Ss-EtOH in the ethanol-induced gastric lesion model was abolished by NG-nitro- L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) pretreatment, suggesting the… Show more

“…The plant is also consumed by local tribes and used in urban areas as an ornamental tree. [3,20] Decoctions made from S. tragacantha leaves, barks and seeds are used by local African healers to alleviate diarrhoea, arthritis, oedema and gout. People of Nsukka area, in the south-east part of Nigeria, use the plant to support orthopaedic patients for pain relief after bone fracture.…”

“…The results were compared to carbenoxolone, a gastric cytoprotective agent, at 100 mg/kg. [20] A notable cytoprotective effect of the ethanolic extract of S. scaphigera seeds was observed in rats with ulcers induced by pyloric ligation or ethanol. [30] The ethanolic extract (100, 300 or 500 mg/kg per oral.)…”

“…[18][19][20] A previous study has demonstrated the Ss-EtOH-induced gastroprotective activity in different models of gastric mucosal injury. 21 In this context, several studies concerning plants-derived products and their anti-inflammatory and gastroprotective properties have been reported. [22][23][24][25] Toxicological results demonstrate that the stratum is safe.…”

“…Oral administration of Ss-EtOH (2000 mg/kg) and intraperitoneal administration (1000 mg/kg) did not result in the death of any animal nor did it cause damage to internal organs. 21 Thus, the data presented about the Malvaceae family and the reported phytochemical and pharmacological profiles of S. striata lead us to investigate the anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive effects of the ethanol extract from stem barks of S. striata (Ss-EtOH) in rodents.…”
