Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors (GIST): A Single Center Experience

Abstract: Tumors classified as GISTs with low and very low risk of progression are associated with a very good prognosis, with virtually all patients surviving 5 years. In patients with high risk or progressive diseases, the prognosis of 5-year survival is much poorer. The main therapeutic option is surgical removal of the tumor (resection or broad excision). Agents showing promise for patients with malignant forms of GISTs are tyrosine kinase receptor inhibitors. Although imatinib is currently used as a first line trea… Show more

“…There are many other single centre studies on GIST survival and recurrence, some of which stratify patients by risk of recurrence. Kostka et al showed that from a cohort of 12 patients diagnosed with GIST from 2004-2009 there were 3 high risk, 1 moderate risk, 5 low/very low risk and 3 no risk cases [12]. From the high risk group one patient died of recurrence within 12 months of resection whereas the other 2 survived >2.5 years whilst on adjuvant imatinib.…”

“…Gastrointestinal stromal tumours (GIST) are relatively rare soft tissue mesenchymal tumours occurring in the gastrointestinal tract, originating in the interstitial cells of Cajal involved in the regulation of the digestive system [1,2]. Recent estimates of GIST annual incidence quoted in the United Kingdom (UK) range from 1.32–1.50 per 100,000 population, although none appear population-based [3,4], equivalent to approximately 800–900 new cases each year [4].…”
