Gastrointestinal mucosal integrity after prolonged exercise with fluid supplementation

Abstract: GI blood loss during exercise is of no clinical importance, at least in our study design with a group of well-trained male subjects who consumed a relatively high amount of fluid (up to 2.3 L). Nevertheless, an increased alpha1-antitrypsin and lysozyme concentration may indicate a transient local mucosal damage with an inflammatory response.

“…Participants were instructed to refrain from intense, vigorous exercise 48 h prior to data collection (Peters et al 2000). Twenty-four hours prior, participants were provided written and verbal instructions for taking two pills (placebo or naproxen), to consume a small meal prior to reporting to the laboratory, consume fluids to promote euhydration, refrain from all physical activity, and attempt to sleep a "normal" amount.…”

“…Most often the type of bleeding is occult and transient, although anecdotal case reports document acute massive upper and lower gastrointestinal bleeding 21. Repeated gastrointestinal bleeding during training and competition may contribute to iron deficiency and anaemia 22.…”

“…Also, endotoxaemia, malabsorption, gastrointestinal tract inflammation, and hypersensitivity reactions have been postulated to occur 1314 21 23All of these effects, however, can mostly be prevented by appropriate dietary (for example, sufficient fluid intake) and other precautions (for example, avoidance of large amounts of aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) 1222 …”

“…Although diminished blood flow to gastric mucosa during extensive exercise sessions may result in the breakdown of mucosal integrity [30,50], transient changes The anxiolytic effect of exercise Marmara Medical Journal 2016; 29: 135-144 in the gastric mucosal circulation by moderate exercise may have an adaptive preconditioning effect on the mucosal barrier [51] have demonstrated that regular physical exercise results in the up-regulation of endothelial NO synthase gene, and a positive correlation exists between exercise intensity and NO levels. Accordingly, in our study, elevated gastric NO levels in the exercised rats may be involved in the exercise-induced gastroprotection through the vasodilatory effect of NO.…”
