Gastric cancer in very young adults: apropos four patients and a review of the literature

Abstract: Whether gastric cancer in young adults differs from gastric cancer in older patients has been a controversial issue. It has long been suspected that young patients with gastric cancer have different biological features with a more aggressive course of disease and a poorer prognosis than older patients. This, however, has not been firmly substantiated. The remaining 43 studies were included in the meta-analysis.…”

“…GC is usually diagnosed in the sixth and seventh decades of life, although it may also be found in younger patients. The incidence of GC in subjects 40 years of age or younger is very low and ranges between 2 and 15% [2][3][4]. The clinicopathological characteristics of GC in elderly patients have been extensively discussed in the literature.…”

“…British Journal of Cancer (2003Cancer ( ) 88, 1914Cancer ( -1919 Gastric cancer is the second most frequent cancer worldwide (Parkin et al, 1999), but in young age groups it is rather uncommon. Several studies have been published about gastric cancer in young patients aged 45 years or younger (Kokkola et al, 1996;Maehara et al, 1996;Theuer et al, 1996;Semba et al, 1998;Rugge et al, 1999;Haruma et al, 2000;Kath et al, 2000). These studies have suggested differences between clinicopathological and histological outcome in gastric cancer in young and elderly age groups.…”
