Gastric Angiolipoma: A Rare Entity

Abstract: Angiolipoma is a benign tumor composed of adipose tissue and proliferating blood vessels that is commonly found in the subcutaneous tissue of the trunk and extremities. Gastric angiolipoma is a rare entity, and to the best of our knowledge, only 4 cases have been reported in the English-language literature thus far. These tumors may present as gastrointestinal bleeding and anemia or with obstructive symptoms. Accurate preoperative diagnosis is challenging because of nonspecific clinical symptoms and lack of sp… Show more

“…These lesions are usually ulcers on the mucosal surface that are accompanied by active inflammation and reactive epithelial changes and exhibit fibrinopurulent exudates. 41 Preoperative colonoscopy biopsy is mostly confined to the mucosa, while angiolipoma of the GI tract is mainly located under the mucosa; thus, a biopsy may only show nonspecific features. Intraoperative frozen section evaluation may be a useful adjunct diagnostic method in the setting of local resection.…”

“…They are rarely seen in the gastrointestinal system[2]. Although endoscopic and radiological examinations can demonstrate the lesion in the gastrointestinal tract, preoperative diagnosis of angiolipomas is still difficult and the final diagnosis is dependent on histopathological evaluation[3]. According to the current literature, only four cases of gastric angiolipoma, which all occurred as a solitary lesion, have been reported[4-7] (Table 1).…”

“…Angiolipoma is a rare and benign variant of lipoma that usually occurs as a subcutaneous tumor. It has a hypervascularity exceeding that of normal lipoma, especially if thrombosis is present within the blood vessels [2] , [3] . These tumors can occur as single or multiple tumors, and are usually located in trunk and upper extremities, and rarely in other areas such as hand, spinal region, breast, gastric, lungs, kidney [4] , [5] .…”
