Rare localization of angiolipoma in the gastrointestinal tract: a case series

Abstract: Objective Angiolipoma is a benign tumor that rarely occurs in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. This case series was performed to increase clinicians’ understanding of the diagnosis and management of GI angiolipoma. Methods We evaluated the clinical presentations, diagnoses, and treatments of 3 patients with angiolipoma in the upper GI tract in our hospital and 27 cases reported in the literature. Results Among all 30 cases of GI angiolipoma, 2 originated in the esophagus, 4 in the stomach, 2 in the duodenum, 1… Show more

“…Moreover, angiolipomas can be distinguished from lipomas by their painful nature, which may be dependent on the degree of vascularity of the tumor [3]. Although many of the colonic angiolipomas in the literature presented with abdominal pain or discomfort, rectal bleeding or positive fecal occult blood testing on examination was more commonly reported on presentation [2,[4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11]. This is consistent with the patient in this case Branching network of thin-and thick-walled vessels vary in sizes.…”

“…This is consistent with the patient in this case report, who initially presented with asymptomatic rectal bleeding for 3 days. Many of the clinical manifestations of colonic angiolipomas appear to correlate with the size of the tumor, and symptoms tend to be nonspecific, making the diagnosis complicated [10].…”

“…Lipoma subtypes, such as angiolipomas have also been described to occur in the GI tract 60 . Molecularly, benign lipomas harbour simple genetic alteration in about 75% of cases, among which the most common is HMGA2 gene rearrangements 61 .…”

“…Although endoscopic and radiologic examination may provide some helpful information, accurate preoperative diagnosis is often challenging. The final diagnosis usually depends on histological examination of the excised specimen, while immunohistochemistry appears to be less specific (3,4). Surgical resection is the main treatment option for gastrointestinal angiolipoma and the recurrence rate is low when the angiolipoma is completely resected (3).…”
