Gas Exchanges in the Leaves of Silage Maize Depending on the Forecrop and Maize Development Stage

Abstract: Crop rotation is an important factor limiting maize productivity in a sustainable farming system. A field trial was conducted to investigate: (i) whether the cultivation of silage maize in a short (2-year) crop rotation in succession after a grassland (grassland-maize), winter triticale (winter triticale-maize), or after maize (maize-maize) will affect the course of the photosynthetic process; (ii) whether these processes will be determined by the stage of maize development; and (iii) whether there is a relati… Show more

“…Net assimilation rate according to Aslani et al,(2020) and Li et al, (2016) is strongly influenced by the spread of sunlight on the plant canopy, the existence of leaves that shade each other will reduce the NAR value. This opinion is in accordance with the statement of Orzech et al, (2022) and Samidjo, (2021)that the net assimilation rate depends on the level of sunlight to plants. The spread of solar radiation on the canopy determines the dry matter production rate per unit leaf area during vegetative growth.…”

“…Thus, NPPT+KP significantly increased chlorophyll content (Table 4), while the chlorophyll content was the determining index of yield increase (Fig. 2), which is in accordance with the previous study (Orzech et al 2022), and thus significantly increased yield. The NPPT+MP treatment accelerated the rate of NPPT degradation in the soil, increased the ammonia volatilization loss, then caused a significant decrease in yield, plant N uptake, and NUE (Table 5) (P < 0.05).…”

“…To overcome abiotic stress, plants induce the accumulation of proline [20] and soluble sugars [21] to safeguard cell membranes by managing intercellular osmotic pressure. Moreover, biomass production in plants is correlated with energy consumption and gas exchange, which in turn depend on net photosynthesis [22]. In view of the food security and sustainability of available water resources, Saudi Arabia is focusing on alternative irrigation resources for groundwater sources, such as desalinated water (i.e., saline water).…”
