Gas diffusion as a new fluidic unit operation for centrifugal microfluidic platforms

Abstract: A centrifugal microfluidic platform prototype with an integrated membrane for gas diffusion is presented for the first time. The centrifugal platform allows multiple and parallel analysis on a single disk and integrates at least ten independent microfluidic subunits, which allow both calibration and sample determination. It is constructed with a polymeric substrate material and it is designed to perform colorimetric determinations by the use of a simple miniaturized optical detection system. The determination … Show more

“…A perspective to overcome such downsides concerns the coupling of the platform in microfluidic devices [55]. Herein, one alternative is the integration of the hydrophobic membrane in a microchip by mechanically engraving different layers of thermoplastic polymers containing microchannels and reservoirs [56]. N.I., not informed; GD, gas diffusion; FA/TBS, flow analysis with time-based sampling; FIA, flow injection analysis; AOD, alcohol oxidase; ADH, alcohol dehydrogenase; SIS, sequential injection system.…”

“…Commercially available membranes, such as polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), have been widely used in the creation of devices for gas diffusion. The use of these membranes requires that a clamp is used to hold the layers together, the membrane being placed between the aqueous and gaseous channels [92].…”

“…The fabrication process regarding COC-based devices used is described in detail elsewhere [25] and consists of four main steps: prototype design, pattern machining, integration of different elements (such as electrodes and PVDF membrane) and final lamination. CAD software was employed for the prototype design ( Fig.…”
