Gap analysis ofMycoplasma bovisdisease, diagnosis and control: An aid to identify future development requirements

Abstract: There is a worldwide problem of disease caused by Mycoplasma (M.) bovis in cattle; it has a significant detrimental economic and animal welfare impact on cattle rearing. Infection can manifest as a plethora of clinical signs including mastitis, pneumonia, arthritis, keratoconjunctivitis, otitis media and genital disorders that may result in infertility and abortion. Current diagnosis and control information are reviewed and analysed to identify gaps in knowledge of the causative organism in respect of the dise… Show more

“…A long-lasting concept is that viruses are primary pathogens, paving the way for bacterial infections (Griffin et al, 2010). Also, Mycoplasma bovis is increasingly recognized as a primary pathogen, although this remains controversial in the scientific community (Calcutt et al, 2018). Despite the importance of BRD, most available studies on pathogen identification in live animals are limited in number of herds and pathogens studied (Autio et al, 2007;Pardon et al, 2011;Murray et al, 2018).…”

“…Mycoplasma bovis strongly contributes to economically important diseases like mastitis and pneumonia and heavily affects animal welfare and antimicrobial use in modern dairy farming [1]. Prevalence seems to be rising and increasing antimicrobial resistance has been reported as well [2,3].…”

“…Calcutt et al. () identify gaps in knowledge of Mycoplasma bovis . In the absence of a commercial M. bovis vaccine, exploration of the genome potentially leading to vaccine development is an important research priority.…”
