Guava plays an important role in Brazilian agribusiness.Among other goals, guava breeding programs aim to achieve more productive cultivars and improved fruit quality. Thus, the present study aimed to investigate genetic variability in full-sib progenies of Psidium guajava (guava) and estimate the genetic progress obtained from different selection criteria in order to select the most promising genotypes. This is the first work that uses these criteria of selection to guava. The experiment was conducted in randomized block design with 2 replicates, and 10 progenies were Received: Oct. 8, 2015 -Accepted: Feb. 17, 2016 predicting the genetic gain between and within progenies. The 5 best progenies among those analyzed and 4 plants within the progenies were selected. Direct selection provided higher gains for number of fruits, and indirect selection generated small gains for the other traits. When the trial values were used as economic weight, the classic index was the selection criterion that showed the best results for gains in fruit number and fruit weight, being indicated as the most appropriate selection strategy for genetic breeding in the studied population.

Resumo -O objetivo deste trabalho foi comparar ganhos genéticos obtidos por diferentes índices de seleção aplicados a múltiplos caracteres agronômicos de sorgo-sacarino (Sorghum bicolor). Foram feitas avaliações de 189 progênies F5 e sete testemunhas, em delineamento de blocos incompletos, com três repetições. Mensuraram-se os caracteres produtividade de matéria verde, teor de sólidos solúveis totais, extração de caldo, teor de sacarose no caldo e sólidos solúveis totais por hectare. Analisaram-se os índices de soma de postos de Mulamba e Mock (ou índice de ranks), da soma dos valores padronizados (ou índice Z), índice padronizado pela média e índice padronizado pela média modificado. As correlações e as percentagens de coincidência na seleção das progênies foram elevadas entre o índice Z, o índice padronizado pela média e o índice padronizado pela média modificado. Entre os índices de seleção testados, o de soma de postos de Mulamba e Mock foi o menos eficiente. A seleção simultânea de progênies de sorgo-sacarino permite ganhos genéticos expressivos para todos os caracteres mensurados.Termos para indexação: Sorghum bicolor, ganho genético, melhoramento genético de plantas. Simultaneous selection in sweet sorghum progenies by selection indicesAbstract -The objective of this work was to compare the genetic gains obtained by different selection indices applied to various agronomic traits of sweet sorghum (Sorghum bicolor). Evaluations were carried out for 189 F5 progenies and seven controls, in an incomplete block design, with three replicates. The measured traits were green matter yield, content of total soluble solids, juice extraction, sucrose content in juice, and total soluble solids per hectare. The rank summation index of Mulamba and Mock (or index of ranks), standardized value summation index (or Z index), standardized by the mean index, and the modified standardized by the mean index were analyzed. The correlations and coincidence percentages in the progeny selections were high between the Z index, the standardized by the mean index, and the modified standardized by the mean index. Among the tested selection indices, the rank summation index of Mulamba and Mock was the less efficient. The simultaneous selection of sweet sorghum progenies allows expressive genetic gains for all measured traits.

-The objective of this work was to evaluate the relative contribution of variables related to fruit production and to seed morphophysiological characteristics to the genetic divergence in passion fruit (Passiflora edulis) progenies, aiming at selecting progenies potentially responsive to fertilization. Ten progenies were evaluated under conditions of low (50% of the recommended dose of fertilizers) and high soil fertility (dose 50% higher than the recommended one), regarding variable sets related to production and to the morphological and physiological characteristics of seeds. The association between these sets was determined by the canonical correlation analysis and by the nearest-neighbor clustering method. The nutritional environments interfered in the relative contribution of the variables to the genetic divergence of the progenies. The accelerated aging test of seeds -from the set of seed physiological quality -did not contribute significantly to the selection of genotypes responsive to soil fertilization. The most responsive progenies to the increased availability of nutrients were grouped according to the production variables that were evaluated under high soil fertility. Irrespectively of the evaluated environment, the set of production variables is the one that contributes more expressively to the identification of the genetic divergence of passion fruit progenies.Index terms: Passiflora edulis, canonical analysis, cluster analysis, fruit quality, responsiveness to fertilization, seed physiological quality. Contribuição de variáveis de produção e de semente para a divergência genética em maracujazeiro-azedo sob diferentes disponibilidades de nutrientesResumo -O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a contribuição relativa de variáveis relacionadas à produção de frutos e a características morfofisiológicas das sementes para a divergência genética em progênies de maracujazeiro-azedo (Passiflora edulis), com vistas à seleção de progênies potencialmente responsivas à fertilização. Dez progênies foram avaliadas em condições de baixa (50% da dose recomendada de fertilizantes) e alta fertilidade do solo (dose 50% superior à recomendada), quanto a conjuntos de variáveis de produção e de características morfológicas e fisiológicas das sementes. A associação entre esses conjuntos foi determinada pela análise de correlação canônica e pelo método de agrupamento do vizinho mais próximo. Os ambientes nutricionais interferiram na contribuição relativa das variáveis para a divergência genética das progênies. O teste de envelhecimento acelerado das sementes -do conjunto de variáveis de qualidade fisiológica -não contribuiu significativamente para a seleção de genótipos responsivos à adubação. As progênies mais responsivas ao aumento da disponibilidade de nutrientes foram agrupadas de acordo com as variáveis de produção avaliadas em condições de alta fertilidade do solo.
