“…However, on the basis of Hine's expression [4] that the effective atomic number of a material composed of several elements can not be expressed by a single number, it can be concluded that it is an energy dependent parameter due to the different partial photon interaction processes with matter for which the various atomic numbers in the material have to be weighted differently. Studies on radiation-shielding properties of different types of glasses have been made before for some photon energies [5][6][7][8][9][10], but studies regarding continuous energy region (i.e. 1 keV-100 GeV) are very scarce [1].…”

“…[7,8]. The total mass attenuation coefficients of Bi 2 O 3 glasses and PbO [6] glasses are comparable, and the both more than BaO glasses, show that more attenuated photon in Bi 2 O 3 , and PbO glasses than BaO-glass. It was found that the total mass attenuation coefficients of glasses were increased with increasing of Bi 2 O 3 and PbO concentration, due to increasing of photoelectric absorption interaction of all glass samples.…”

“…It is seen that the density of glass samples increase with higher R m O n content, due to higher molecular weight of R m O n compared to with B 2 O 3 , therefore it is expected result. The density of Bi 2 O 3 glasses more than PbO glasses [6] and BaO glasses respectively. The density of all glass samples are illustrated in Fig.…”

“…The half value layers (HVL) of all glass samples based on the present work are shown in Fig. 6 with some standard radiation shielding concretes and commercial windows taken from literature 5,11) . It is found that the Bi 2 O 3 and PbO glasses have better shielding properties than commercial windows, ferrite and barite concrete, reflecting the advantage of bismuth and lead component in radiation shielding glass.…”
