Gamma radiation sensitivity of the eggs, larvae and pupae of Indian meal moth Plodia interpunctella (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae)

Abstract: F(1) males from irradiated pupae were more sterile than parental males. To prevent larval emergence from irradiated eggs, a dose of 350 Gy is required. The same dose is required to prevent the larvae from reaching the adult stage.

“…Elbadry (1965) suggested that moths eggs exposed to gamma radiation could serve as a food resource for Trichogramma rearing. Examining the acceptability of irradiated moth's eggs to parasite development showed that irradiated eggs were as suitable as control ones (Marston and Ertle 1969;Fatima et al 2002;Saour 2004;Ayvaz et al 2008b). In order to determine the irradiation dose, however, the radiosensitivity of the eggs has to be investigated.…”

“…Due to its weak penetrating power, however, eggs have to be treated in a very thin layer which may limit its applications, or high quality, more expensive machines are to be used. Ionizing radiation, particularly gamma radiation, has a very high penetrating ability and has been used for killing insect eggs before (Brower 1982;Tilton and Brower 1983;Toba and Burditt 1992;Mansour 2004;Ayvas and Tuncbileck 2006;Ayvaz et al 2008b). “…However, the impact of chemical compounds both on the environment and human health, as well as the increasing resistance of insects to chemical formulations, make exploration of alternative environment-friendly methods a prerequisite for effective pest control (Ayvaz et al 2008).…”

“…A host of others point to health problems from accidental or deliberate exposure to pesticides. It is therefore imperative to develop safe alternatives that have the potential to replace the toxic fumigants, yet are effective, economical and convenient to use [6]. One of the ways of reducing the continual dependence on imported insecticides is to use the widely available but underutilized plant products.…”
