Efficacy of Agave sisalana n-Hexane Extract in the Control of Callosobruchus maculatus (Fabricius) (Colloptera: Bruchidae) Pest

Abstract: Collosobruchus maculatus is a weevil that has been causing great damage to cowpeas especially in the stores. Therefore, there is need to search for biopesticides that can be used to control the pest rather than using synthetic chemicals. In this work different concentrations of Agave sisilana n-hexane extract were prepared using two-fold dilution at 100, 50, 25, 12.5, 6.25, 3.125 and 1.5625 mg/ml and were used to treat 40 selected beans in different kilner jars. The treated beans were infested with ten (10) id… Show more

“…The investigation also reports use of methanol can extract more active biological compounds since methanol extract inhibits the growth of microbes more than aqueous extract. Studies done by Hammuel, also show that of methanolic extract of A. bidentata roots is rich in alkaloids followed by flavonoids, steroids, terpenoids, glycosides and saponins with the absence of tannins 27 . Studies also done by Chigodi, (2013) indicate the methanolic extract of the roots of the A. bidentata plant indicates the presence of tannins, alkaloids, glycosides, saponins, flavonoids, reducing sugars, terpenoids, phlobatannins, steroids and Coumarins 28 .…”

“…The leaf of A. sisalana Perrine has also been used for the biologic control of Callosobruchus maculatus. A concentration of 100 mg/mL reduced the oviposition, larvae survival and pupae stage, and their population on bean infested seeds [80].…”
