Gamma Pre-Irradiation Effects on Natural Dyeing Performances of Proteinic Blended Yarns

Abstract: The objective of this study was to develop a naturally dyeing process of 70% wool /30% Angora mohair blended yarns by using bio-mordants as an environmentally friendly alternative for the conventional metallic salts. Bio-mordanting operation was achieved by using of condensed tannin extract from quebracho bark trees. Conventional mordanting has been performed using the conventional mordants like copper sulphate and tin chloride. Another specific objective of this study was to investigate the possibility of app… Show more

“…Two measurements were done of each sample and finally the water vapour permeability was calculated, WVT, Equation (1). 24 is mass of the sample on the cup of water after 24 hours (g); m 0 -mass of the sample on the cup of water at the beginning (g); S -area of measuring (S = 7,065 cm 2 ); t -measuring time 24 hours (h).…”

“…Natural dyeing plants usually posses low color yield and require prolonged time to dye textiles satisfactorily. Several pretreatments like cationization, plasma treatment, enzyme treatment, gamma treatment, and microwave treatment are examples of techniques which have been studied to overcome this drawback [7,10,[20][21][22][23][24]. To minimize the consumption of energy, dye, mordant, and auxiliaries besides decreasing the required time, while gaining the highest dyebath exhaustion, optimization of the dyeing process is really important [25].…”

“…In one study, nut shell extract was used as a natural dye, and Quebracho bark tree extract was used as a bio-mordant for dyeing wool/angora blended yarn. It is stated that the samples bio-mordanted with Quebracho exhibit significantly increased color fastness to light for both radiation levels examined (Stanculescu et al 2017 ).…”

“…To improve the exhaustion of natural dyes onto textile fibers, different techniques have been employed. Several pretreatments like cationization [7], plasma treatment [6,[8][9], enzyme treatment [10], gamma treatment [11][12], and microwave treatment [13] are examples of techniques which have been studied to overcome this drawback. However, the most usual way to enhance the dyeing of textile fibers with natural dyes is still mordanting with metal salts.…”
