Gamma-irradiated β-glucan modulates signaling molecular targets of hepatocellular carcinoma in rats

Abstract: β-glucans are one of the most abundant forms of polysaccharides known as biological response modifiers which influence host's biological response and stimulate immune system. Accordingly, this study was initiated to evaluate irradiated β-glucan as a modulator for cellular signaling growth factors involved in the pathogenesis of hepatocellular carcinoma in rats. Hepatocellular carcinoma was induced with 20 mg diethylnitrosamine/kg BW. Rats received daily by gastric gavage 65 mg irradiated β-glucan/kg BW. It was… Show more

“…Gamma irradiation is a relatively simple method and leads to an increase in the functionality of β-glucans [ 62 ]. Several studies have investigated the effect of irradiating β-glucans on their biological and pharmacological properties [ 63 , 64 , 65 , 66 ]. Different gamma irradiation doses were used, starting from 2 up to 75 kGy.…”

“…Studies proved that hepatocarcinogenesis had been linked with variations in several important cellular responses. Targeting molecules during the multistep process of hepatocarcinogenesis was of interest from the therapeutic perception because this may aid in a coup, delay, or even prevent tumorigenesis [ 29 , 30 ]. Phytochemicals were shown to control HCC via interference with all phases of carcinogenesis, including initiation, promotion, and progression [ 31 , 32 ].…”
