Gamification in Nursing Education: An Integrative Literature Review

Abstract: The objective of this literature review and evaluation project was to determine what evidence exists on the use of interactive digital learning and gamification for adult learners in nursing, for the purpose of guiding a redesign of our organization's online clinical education courses. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses was used in the literature search, with the critical analysis and leveling of evidence. After determining the search terms, four electronic databases (PubMed… Show more

“…Regarding the impact of the use of DGBL on learning outcomes in this study, no significant differences were found in the occupational therapy undergraduate students and significant differences were found in the nursing undergraduate group. These findings support the findings of other research that there is no universal conclusion of the effects of DGBL on learning outcomes in students [41]. In addition, to obtain more information about students' perception on the effectiveness of DGBL in their learning process, a qualitative analysis was applied in this study [10].…”

“…This is an important indicator to check in future research, since it may be necessary to design personalized gamification activities depending on the type of student and the area of knowledge. The use of DGBL is a resource with important potential in the research of the teaching-learning process in virtual environments [41].…”

“…In this context, the acquisition of knowledge and skills of students about COVID-19 increases with interaction, further increasing with game mechanics 10 ; 13 . Moreover, insufficient information on COVID-19 management adversely affects the willingness among senior nursing students to participate in internships at contagious disease departments 5 ; 20 . Consequently, the development of an e-learning tool, such as a SGs, could support nursing students in the pandemic.…”
