Galectins-1, -3, and -7 Are Prognostic Markers for Survival of Ovarian Cancer Patients

Abstract: There is a tremendous need for developing new useful prognostic factors in ovarian cancer. Galectins are a family of carbohydrate binding proteins which have been suggested to serve as prognostic factors for various cancer types. In this study, the presence of Galectin-1, -3, and -7 was investigated in 156 ovarian cancer specimens by immunochemical staining. Staining was evaluated in the cytoplasm and nucleus of cancer cells as well as the peritumoral stroma using a semi quantitative score (Remmele (IR) score)… Show more

“…It could regulate apoptosis and cell differentiation, bind with CD45, CD3 and CD4 to inhibit CD45 protein phosphatase activity and lymphocyte-activated enzyme dephosphorylation [25]. Studies confirmed that Gal-1 was closely related with tumor development, metastasis, invasion and malignancy, such as gastric cancer [26], ovarian cancer [27], and pancreatic cancer [28]. In this study, our data indicated that Gal1 could promote CRC cells proliferation, migration and invasion.…”

“…Galectin-7 is well known as a p53 inducible protein. In other cancer types, including breast and ovarian, galectin-7 expression is elevated due to a mutation in the p53 gene (17,30). In breast cancer, this mutant p53 elevates galectin-7 via nuclear factor-κB and tumor necrosis factor α, without inducing apoptosis (30).…”

“…The role of galectin-7 in cancer can be pro-or anti-tumor: In breast cancer, galectin-7 is pro-tumor, enhancing spontaneous metastatic capability and protecting cancer cells from apoptosis (16). Galectin-7 is a negative prognostic marker for ovarian cancer (17) and renal clear-cell carcinoma (18). Conversely, galectin-7 may exhibit anti-tumor properties in other types of cancer; for example, it is absent in prostate cancer cells (19), reduced in gastric cancer (20) and causes prostate and DLD-1 colon cancer cells to have greater sensitivity to apoptosis (19,21).…”

“…Indeed, galectin-7 has been proposed to serve as a marker in patients with certain type of cancer. Interestingly, galectin-7 overexpression on tumour tissues could be correlated to patient survival notably in ovarian [ 114 ] or in cervical [ 59 , 115 ] carcinomas. Furthermore, galectin-7 expression has been associated with better survival after chemo- or radio-therapies [ 91 , 115 ] and has been proposed to serve as a predictive marker of chemo- and radio-therapy resistance [ 116 ].…”
