Gait analysis following single-shot hyaluronic acid supplementation: a pilot randomized double-blinded controlled trial

Abstract: Objectives Viscosupplementation with new-generation, polyol-containing, cross-linked hyaluronic acid (HA) gels reduces joint inflammation in patients with knee osteoarthritis. Gait analysis is a complementary outcome measure to standard patient-reported scores and physical measures for testing the effect of HA injection. This three-arm, prospective, randomized, controlled, double-blind, feasibility pilot study investigated which gait parameters are more sensitive following a single bolus injection… Show more

“…Up to date, pharmacological strategies have been used, such as hyaluronic acid that acts like a lubricant and enables better gliding [12][13][14][15] or 5-fluorouracil that blocks fibro-osseous fibroblast proliferation, associated with OPEN 1 Division of Plastic Surgery and Hand Surgery, University Hospital Zurich, ZKF, Sternwartstrasse 14, 8091 Zurich, Switzerland. 2 Laboratory of Applied Mechanobiology, ETH Zürich, Vladimir-Prelog-Weg 1-5/10, 8093 Zurich, Switzerland.…”

“…Few prospective intervention studies have reported the impact of pharmacologic treatment compared with placebo on EQ-5D in patients with OA [ 28 , 29 ]. Studies of tapentadol and oxycodone have reported inconsistent benefits on EQ-5D index value [ 30 32 ], and there was no improvement from baseline in EQ VAS following a single injection of hyaluronic acid for OA [ 33 ].…”

“…1 Moreover, due to scar formation and fibrosis, the healing tendon tissue is of inferior mechanical stability as compared to the native healthy tissue and is therefore prone to rerupture when loaded. 2 Different approaches have been used to counteract these problems, such as administration of hyaluronic acid as a lubricant, 3,4 5-fluorouracil to block fibroosseous fibroblast proliferation associated with extrinsic tendon healing 5 or anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen, that showed to be a good antiadhesion agent thanks to the inhibition of cyclooxygenases-1 and −2. 6 In addition, novel implant materials to address these two major problems are currently being developed.…”
